In a historic first, Russia is set to launch an actor and a film director into space to make a feature film in orbit—a project the nation's space chief has hailed as a chance to raise the prestige of Russia's space program.

Actor Yulia Peresild and director Klim Shipenko are set to blast off Tuesday for the International Space Station in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft together with cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, a veteran of three space missions. After 12 days on the space outpost, Peresild and Klimenko will return to Earth with another Russian cosmonaut.

The crew plans to film segments of a new movie titled "Challenge" about a surgeon summoned to rush to the space station to save a crew member who suffers a heart condition.

Speaking at a news conference at the Russian launch facility in Baikonur, Kazakhstan, Peresild acknowledged that the training for the mission was grueling but described it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Russian crew docks at ISS to film first movie in space (Update)

A Russian actress and director on Tuesday arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) in a bid to best the United States and film the first movie in orbit.

The Russian crew is set to beat a Hollywood project that was announced last year by "Mission Impossible" star Tom Cruise together with NASA and Elon Musk's SpaceX.

Actress Yulia Peresild, 37, and film director Klim Shipenko, 38, took off from the Russia-leased Baikonur Cosmodrome in ex-Soviet Kazakhstan as scheduled.

But they belatedly docked at the ISS at 1222 GMT after veteran cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov switched to manual control.

"Welcome to the ISS!" Russia's space agency Roscosmos said on Twitter.

Russian actress, director and cosmonaut return to Earth after 12 days on International Space Station making a movie

An actress and film director have returned to Earth after spending nearly two weeks in space making a movie on the International Space Station.

Yulia Peresild and Klim Shipenko emerged from the Russian capsule smiling after it landed on the Kazakhstan steppe along with cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky inside.

Two of the group had rocketed into orbit on 5 October for a 12-day stint to film segments of a movie called The Challenge, which the Russian space agency Roscosmos said would help attract the "cream of the crop" to the sector.

Russia premieres first feature film shot in space

The first feature film shot in space premiered in Russian cinemas on Thursday, as Moscow exulted in beating a rival Hollywood project amid a confrontation with the west.

The Challenge is about a surgeon dispatched to the International Space Station (ISS) to save an injured cosmonaut. Russia sent an actor and a film director for a 12-day stint on the ISS in October 2021 to film scenes aboard the orbiting laboratory.

The Russian crew beat a Hollywood project announced in 2020 by Tom Cruise together with Nasa and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

According to Ernst, the film cost less than a billion roubles (£10m), although the price tag of the entire project has not been revealed.
