Sir David Amess murder: Terror suspect being held by police is named Ali Harbi Ali, Sky News understands

The name the police have of the terror suspect arrested on suspicion of murder following the stabbing of a senior Conservative MP is Ali Harbi Ali, Sky News understands.

The 25-year-old, who is a British citizen, with Somali heritage, is not thought to have been previously known to the security services.

However, the investigation into the killing of Sir David Amess is still in its infancy so that could change if new details emerge.

The terror suspect arrested following the killing of Conservative MP Sir David Amess is the son of a former senior Somali government official, Sky News understands.

Ali Harbi Ali's father, Harbi Ali Kullane, declined to comment when asked by Sky News about his son, a 25-year-old British national, in an exchange of written messages on Saturday other than to say that he was "traumatised"

A Sky News correspondent who knocked at an address in London where he is believed to be staying received no reply on Sunday morning.

However, two police officers then arrived at the property and were let inside.

The 25-year-old is being held under the Terrorism Act and officers have until Friday to question him.

Whitehall officials confirmed the man's name to the BBC, and said he was a British man of Somali heritage.

The BBC understands Mr Ali was referred to the counter-terrorist Prevent scheme some years ago, but was never a formal subject of interest to MI5.

Police say they are not looking for anyone else for now.

Early investigations revealed a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism, police said.

It is thought Ali Harbi Ali did not spend long in the Prevent programme - which aims to stop people becoming radicalised.

What was written is usually associated with fascist here in Portugal, and for those who don't know Portugal was a fascist regime up to 1974, and it predate Nazi Germany and was loosely based in part on Italian fascism.

Ali Harbi Ali given whole-life sentence for murder of David Amess

Ali Harbi Ali, 26, was handed a whole-life tariff by Mr Justice Sweeney after being convicted on Monday of murdering the MP and of planning terrorist attacks on other MPs, including the cabinet minister Michael Gove, for two years before he killed Amess.

The judge said the case was of such exceptional seriousness that a rare whole-life order was merited. Ali also received a life sentence for his planning of attacks.

The jury at the Old Bailey on Monday took less than 20 minutes to convict Ali – who had once wanted to be a doctor.

So, will die in prison then.....good. So, given average male life span, he's got a 52 year wait for his 72 virgins. Hope they're worth it.
