Physicists Snap First Image of “Electron Ice” – Predicted More Than 90 Years Ago

More than 90 years ago, physicist Eugene Wigner predicted that at low densities and cold temperatures, electrons that usually zip through materials would freeze into place, forming an electron ice, or what has been dubbed a Wigner crystal. While physicists have obtained indirect evidence that Wigner crystals exist, no one has been able to snap a picture of one – until now.

Physicists from Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley recently published in the journal Nature an image of electron ice sandwiched between two semiconductor layers. The image is proof positive that these crystals exist.

So the universe keeps expanding until it freezes...

Actually with the current theories as the Universe continues to expand andnever stop. Current science can't completely explain why the speed of this expansion is increasing not decreasing or even staying constant. So long as their is expansion the leading edge will create enough friction that it will never freeze.

Here is an interesting article that cover one of many ways the Universe was created and the expansion began and while nit as popular as it once was it is the best known theory of the Universes Creation so here I am using the Big Bang Theory as a reference point.

That's the key pivot isn't it?

Space and friction kinda sounds contradictory as well as cold empty space being hot enough to never reach frozen a state.

Yes Sir it certainly is and you smashed the nail with your hammer!:tu:

i think when you consider the Universe there really is no empty Space, because Dark Matter and Matter are equally dispersed throughout the Universe!

"Flat" universe... Not to be confused with a flat "earth"

There is truly no guarantee that's the case, what if our Universe is surrounded by multiple Universes and as all these Universes expand they actually over lap each other!

Actually "flat" is the current constant that measures with the observable universe, multiple universes and multi dimensional string / membrane propositions sounds like something too desperate just to line the equations up.

Give those simulation machines enough juice just to keep running will give all kinds of wild constants a free run at the decimal points.

Won't mean anything if it's multi universe would it? Might as well just let it go with multi creators in many dimensions because it won't matter one way or the other.

You make a great point my friend, however the theory of a Multi-Universe is catch on in some circles and it's gaining strength. Since Professor Hawking proposed his Eternal Inflation Theory many generalized thoughts of the Universes creation and expansion have vastly changed.

Here is a quick explanation of Hawking Eternal Inflation Theory:

""Here's where the concept of inflation runs into problems of its own. Physicists deeply dislike the idea that inflation would stop suddenly, for no particular reason. They'd much rather have a mechanism that explains what drove inflation and then caused it to stop. That's why they assume some sort of quantum field drove it, before petering out. The idea is that the field starts out in an only approximately stable, higher-energy "false vacuum" state in which space stretches exponentially. It then relaxes to its true lowest energy state, in which space expands much more slowly.""

""The scenario works a little too well, however. The exponentially expanding false vacuum produces more and more of itself, so there's ever more space expanding at an incredibly fast rate. Our universe is a patch that has undergone the transition to the low-energy true vacuum state. But such transitions should happen randomly, so there should be lot of other universes, too. In fact, the process should produce an ever-increasing amount of space that's growing at an exponential rate, peppered with an infinite number "pocket universes" growing more slowly.""

That's cool we don't have to agree on everything, but .I hope we can agree that Professor Steven Hawking was a brilliant guy, and that Covid 19 is a naturally occurring Virus!:D
