Finnish scientists create 'sustainable' lab-grown coffee

Latte drinkers may in the future be sipping on java sourced from a petri dish rather than a plantation, say scientists behind a new technique to grow what they hope to be sustainable coffee in a lab.

"It's really coffee, because there is nothing else than coffee material in the product," Heiko Rischer tells AFP, pointing to a dish of light brown powder.

His team of researchers at the Finnish technical research institute VTT believe their coffee would avoid many of the environmental pitfalls associated with the mass production of one of the world's favourite drinks.

The coffee is not ground from beans, but instead grown from a cluster of coffee plant cells under closely controlled temperature, light and oxygen conditions in a bioreactor.

Once roasted, the powder can be brewed in exactly the same way as conventional coffee.

I bet that is more expensive than a star bucks coffee.   So now someone wants to take away the only means of support and survival for a lot of coffee growers ( not the plantations, the communities that grow shade grown coffee)   Absolutely idiotic way to play in the lab.

The plant with seeds that can grow meat..........'sustainable' lab-grown coffee........ The future that we used to see only in the Sc-fi B films is approaching very fast.

Maybe a lot of small coffee growers will still be fine and we will continue to pay the fair trade price. .  It might limit the clearing of rainforest  for large new commercial endeavors.

That would be good, but right now the largest industry that is decimating the rain forest is the beef industry.

How about changing the but to and.  Then we could focus attention on that as well.  

Climate change is like a lot of Western religion.   We spend a lot more time in the US preaching about things and telling other countries how they should live than living that way as a country ourselves.

Yes.  using an AND instead of BUT does make sense and our country is kind of arrogant as a nation for a lot of reasons.  (not the only one mind you, but the only  one in the Americas)
