First U.S. passport with an "X" gender designation issued

Seems like they could just do away with listing gender in a passport now. What purpose does it serve if someone can effectively opt-out?

The gender listed in a passport is used to confirm the identity of the holder. If the gender is “x” which is a self defined identifier, how is someone else supposed to recognize a person is an “x”?

I agree on that part.

Why would i care how somebody else identifies on their ID?

It has nothing to do with me.

I can see how it would cause a lot of confusion in airports...especially in other countries. Even if you dye your hair or go gray, lose or gain a lot of weight you are supposed to get a passport that resembles your new look. Not having a gender listed, when you obviously look either male or female, will be a big problem getting through customs causing lines not to flow quickly.

The only issue will be down the red-line when someone has to "put-on-the-gloves."

Customs is already sensitive to gender when it comes to personal searches.  It's their job to look for evidence, not humiliate people.

I wasn't talking about any kind of search.  I'm talking about the extra conversations/explanation, possibly asking for other forms of ID. The kinds of things that hold up lines. My husband and I got held up in customs because when he bought my ticket he gave my nickname instead of my official name. I go by a shorter variation. I felt bad holding up the line because this guy was having a bad day, asked all kinds of questions and I had to show him two other forms of ID. I could hear people grumbling behind us.

Exactly. Why would anyone care?

If you can self identify, then what relevance does it have? What purpose does it serve on an ID towards proving your identity to others? Zilch. You might as well list someone’s favorite color on their passport.

Do liberals not understand how IDs and bathrooms work?

Great; and, I said the ONLY time it will cause an issue is down the red-line.

The third gender from Thailand travels the world without causing these problems.

You think people are signing up for discrimination? They are signing up for privilege. You think you can identify them by their gender? They are above your stupid genders. Foolish mortal……

Multiple countries have third gender passports already.

I think it is pretty pointless, however.

I travel pretty extensively and the only thing they do is glance at your picture and run the passport through a validation machine. I've never seen anyone get pulled over to measure height, weight, or check gender.

Anytime you wish to open your eyes the real world will be waiting to be observed.

An 'X' will face more restrictions globally while you will have, for example, Thai Ladyboys travelling around the world with a passport marked 'M'.

I've got to ask.  Have you ever even left the country?  Most conservatives I know never even left the state but insist on speaking for/projecting their values on the world.

Not defending nothing.  Just telling you how things happen at the barrier.  If you can't comprehend official information from a government passport office, then there's not much helping you.

Barrier of what?

it’s you that would fail that test. If the information is self-identified then there is no way for yourself to recognize who an ID belongs to,

The Customs Barrier.  That's kind of what the thread is about.

I gave you the link to a government passport office.  You've demonstrated again you didn't comprehend the information within.

Yes, this is in the same realm as police issuing video of a crime taking place, blurring out the faces & then asking for help identifying them? Clown world indeed.

Yeah, real tragic. If an X person can’t handle and M or F being in their passport and that results in difficulties, that’s on them, How much whining about discrimination at barriers are we going to have to listen to before the X people are allowed special privileges there just like they are given in bathrooms? Or in language?
You aren’t even allowed to tell a joke about an X. Do you really think they will suffer travel restrictions? I’m surprised we haven’t already invested billions into building gender neutral customs barriers. Or perhaps just drawn new gender neutral borders altogether. Gender neutral customs barriers are a human rights issue.

Here in Canada X as a gender identifier on government issued documents (health cards, drivers licences, passports, etc.) has been available for a number of years now. When it was first introduced on passports, our government made a concerted diplomatic effort to mitigate any potential difficulties Canadians identifying as X might have when travelling abroad. Its primary concern was with countries that prosecute people who identify as trans. There's no knowing what actions foreign law enforcement (in these, and other countries) could take. Transgender people might be detained, denied admission, harassed, or even arrested. In some cases, they might even be killed.

The safest solution, in my opinion, is to have gender removed from all identity documents, especially passports. As other members here have noted, we now have better, more secure, options when it comes to establishing identity. It is important that we respect people of all diversities, regardless of identity, but more important that we keep them safe.

Then you don't know the same class of conservatives I know. Most of them are avid travelers and have been all over the world. The ones that couldn't afford that travel all over the US, Canada and the Caribbean.

I think that question was directed at me. I originally glossed it over and didn’t respond. Anyway, I’m not the most internationally traveled person. Although I’ve been to Europe and to an even a more exotic country called Canada.

I think it’s a silly parameter. Perhaps even a bigoted and racist parameter. How internationally traveled do you think someone from inner city Detroit is? Are you shaming that demographic by proxy of your jab at conservatives?

Anyhoo, as long as we are swapping war stories, most the liberal I know have never traveled further than the water source for their bong.

As far as projecting values, the industrial liberal complex takes home the trophy. Not only around the world but back in time. According to those international globe hoppers, someone who lived 300 years ago was psychologically and intellectually no different than someone who lives today. The values of an American colonialist were the same as your typical blue hair SJW. Liberals can pass judgement on them  because their values are apparently universal throughout space and time. Their values transcend space and time. They are the Democratic socialists from the year 3,000.

Seeing how Canada and many European countries have/accept third gender passports- one would think that your own personal experience would have shown how your perceptions are wrong.

You and Michelle are perhaps right in the conservatives I know around here being a product of their environment= I.E. Small town, church going, on welfare/living check to check, etc.

At work we had a day for the confused where we all had to have a lunch picnic together with a themed quiz.

Afterwards our director got mad. Out of about 300 staff only 62 attended it. The rest all went for a walk off to food outlets and shops instead. This is where the attack on freedom exists, trying to mandate the views and opinions of others, and to dictate to them their morale compass.

We need schools to be teaching kids not everyone is going to agree with you and your choices in life. Thats life. Do what you want to do, but dont try and force what you want onto others.

Exactly.  So if someone wants to put X as their gender on their passport, it's their business.
