Crazy beautiful sunset in western Iowa this evening, December 26, 2021.

Photo was taken with an iPhone 6s.

You have a natural talent for capturing animals at their most charming moment. :)

I tried to make friends, but he was a little too suspicious of me. However, if you look closely, it appears as though he managed to smile for the camera.

Skunks do a good job of stopping the white grubs from eating my lawn, so they’re really helpful to have around.

Edit: It was upset that I didn’t share my hot chips.

Wonderful creature! :D

Yes, it does look like a little sneaky smile there. :D

@LightAngel

I’ll watch the video later this evening when my WiFi speeds up. Looks interesting!

I saw this photo on another website and I thought it would fit well in this thread. In my opinion, it’s one of the best photos of 2021!

And Happy New Year to you and yours!

This is one of these cases where a picture tells a story better than the written words ever could.

Gorillas can learn to stand up if they grew up around humans - they simply copy the humans around them. ;)

I think the picture is real.

Hi joc - It does look photoshopped, but apparently it’s a legitimate photo:

@LightAngel Thanks for the tree video! Very interesting.

One of my favorite deer photos. My camera beeps when I take photos, and the deer are sometimes captivated by the sound. They’ll stand and stare at me for a few moments before slowly trotting away.

After reading SBs article with several experts pointing out the same thing...I bow in agreement!  :):nw:

@Still Waters Thanks for that - it adds a whole other dimension to the photo! I’ll try to find the documentary ‘Virunga’ that the Yahoo article mentions.

This looks like it, a Netflix original.

You are welcome.

Yup, the fact that trees communicate with each other through a network (mycorrhizal network) - is absolutely amazing. They actually warn other trees about dangers (they send distress signals) so the other trees can alter their behavior - they also share nutrients and water through the networks.

My love for nature started when I was a child, and I have always treated nature with a lot of respect!

There is a natural order and harmony in nature that I love.

Thanks for the deer picture - they are such elegant creatures!

We just saw this, and it was wonderful.

We live in such stressful times, but looking at nature programs will remind us all who we really are and where our focus should be! :cat:

That's a good attitude to have about skunks.  It's not like they are going to just leave if you kindly asked them to.  Better to have a happy skunk than an unhappy skunk in your yard.

Same scene, just before sunset. I like the patterns carved out by the wind.
Fortunately this was just a gentle snowfall, and not a blizzard. The snow is light as a feather and very easy to shovel.

Don't ask me why, but it reminds me of the Little House on the Prairie.

And that's a compliment!

I’m currently on a 10-day road trip to visit friends and family in Colorado and Arizona. I spent the day hiking in the Coconino National Forest area near Sedona, Arizona. The desert here is beautiful, and it was a perfect day for hiking.
