That is a great picture.

Thanks, bees are extremely friendly if you’re not threatening them.

Hey does anyone know what kind of insects bats like to eat? I’ve had one flying around in my house for two days now. The poor thing must be half starved.

I think I’m going to make him a pet.

None. I try to spend as little time in nature as possible. The natural world is governed by brutal competition for resources, locked in a constant struggle for existence.

This is true, but it’s been my experience that there is more adventure found in hardship than in comfort.

I found where my pet bat was hiding. I have an old pair of leather shoes that I wear on rainy days while bringing in the mail or the groceries. Out of habit, I slipped my feet into my shoes without paying much attention and was just getting ready to step outside when I heard a strange hissing sound that I’ve never heard before. I immediately stopped and carefully looked around so I wouldn’t inadvertently step on a snake, and there was Batty clinging to the side of my shoe!

The poor little guy was completely spent, obviously hungry, and certainly dehydrated after two days of flying figure 8s through my living room and dining room. I felt he was close to the end, but as you can see in the second photo, he still managed a big smile for the camera.

I took him outside and gently set him on the grass in hopes that the cool air would revive him. And it worked!! When I checked on him a few minutes later, he had vanished into thin air.

Now, some of you may question my choice of names for Batty, but I’ve never named a bat before. I’m sure to have more bats stop in for a visit, so if you can think of a better name please let me know.   :)

I don't think names have to be exotic or mysterious to be interesting - I think Batty is a fun and sweet name, and very down to earth.

I like it. :D

Not a technically great photo.

But just enjoying sitting on a log listening to a creek and kookaburras and currawongs and crickets.

Sunset tonight over Audubon County, Iowa. After three days of wind and cold rain, it was nice to see the sun again.

Stealth camping on a sand dune before meeting family at the beach house for Easter tomorrow / Sunday (and probably too much food and drinks).

Sunset looking in the opposite direction at the ocean.

Edit: Technically last light, not sunset.
I didn’t have time to snap a proper sunset picture because I needed to get the tent set up and sealed from the wolf spiders,

(Their eyes glow blue in torchlight and you can’t tell if they are small or big unless you get up close)
