Doctors say the man is recovering well. The news here tonight said he is being monitored closely for an sign of rejection. Rejection can also occur when using human organs. I hope this all proves out well.

Yes. I hope it turns out well. So far so good. It will open new doors for sure :)

It sounds like the next step along the line for genetically creating usable organs for transplant.  We've been using Porcine heart valves  as replacements in human hearts, for years now, with limited success.

My mom had a valve replacement like that at 82 years old.  She lived to be nearly 86.  Four years we would not have had with her otherwise.

Interesting, hoping that it will give him some more years and in any case, he give that time to science for future application.

This makes me think of articles I've read about certain receivers of hearts having gained personality traits from the heart donor, something I speculate could have something to do with that the heart actually has a kind of "brain"/neurons, something that is not that commonly known. Wonder how that works when you get a heart from a pig.

Man Who Had Pig Heart Transplant Has Criminal Record After Stabbing Man Seven Times

The man who received the world’s first pig-to-human heart transplant has a criminal record after stabbing a man seven times in the 1980s, according to the Washington Post.

Since the news of the successful transplant, the sister of a man Bennett was convicted of stabbing in 1988 had come forward to criticise the transplant, saying her brother was never given the second chance Bennett received.

Pig hearths are a good fit, big enough and in quantities. Not a lot of monkey have big enough hearth, they are hard to keep for breeding and are too much ''human'' to be used for spare parts.

I wonder if you can put a modified human heart in a pig?

That's sad. Atleast he got two months longer to spend time with his family than he would have otherwise.

They haven't released what caused the death yet, I'm curious to see. Regardless of what it is that knowledge will push the field forward more. 2 months in a new record when it comes to xeno heart transplants.

No.  They use pig hearts because they are closer anatomically to a human heart.  Humans share many features of pigs.  Eye color to skin.

It's why I say it's a good fit... and they have quantity too.

A gorilla heart or Chimp heart is mostly identical to human one... DNA is way closer to alleviate imune system reaction. It's why they are working on hybrid for graft.

It's nothing about color of skin tho, lol !

This is actually good news. A pig virus is something that is preventable and treatable, which gives hope for how effective the xenotransplants might

Just because DNA may be closer, key shared components that humans share with pigs and not apes make pig hearts more anatomically similar to human.  Size matters.  Google "What heart is most similar to humans?".  The answer is Pig hearts.
