Parties held in Downing Street as Queen and country mourned death of Prince Philip (Telegraph)

Downing Street staff drank alcohol into the early hours at two leaving events the night before Prince Philip’s socially distanced funeral, The Telegraph can reveal.

On the evening of Friday April 16 2021, Britain was in a period of public mourning. Union flags on Government buildings across Westminster hung at half mast to mark the passing of Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, the previous week.

With the country in step two of a strict lockdown roadmap, which barred indoor mixing, mourners were told not to leave flowers due to the Covid threat. A book of condolence was set up online to “reduce the risk of transmission” from physical signings.

In a private chapel in Windsor Castle the Prince’s coffin lay overnight. The next day the Queen, her face covered by a black mask, would say farewell to her husband of 73 years. With social distancing rules in force, she sat alone.

Downing Street Apologises To Buckingham Palace For Parties Held Night Before Prince Philip's Funeral

Downing Street has apologised to Buckingham Palace after it emerged that a number of parties had been held at No 10 the night before Prince Philip's funeral.

The PM’s deputy official spokesman said: “It’s deeply regrettable that this took place at a time of national mourning, and No 10 has apologised to the Palace.

It would have been much more politically effective if these party revelations had come a few weeks or months before the next election.

Who stands to gain from this being put in the media now?

Boris withstood a similar press and political pile on with Cummings and it achieved little. Except to prove the media doesn't have the clout they think they have and retired from that battle with a bloody nose and their target still in post.

Seems the all encompassing desire to remove Boris has blinded the party whistleblowers to a better long term strategy. ;)

The Tory party itself has finally realized that Johnson has outlived his usefulness, undoubtedly this is the Tory grey men leaking to get rid of the liability that Johnson has become. Better now than just before the election. The local elections are a useful way of focusing Tory MP's minds on how bad things could get under Johnson though I doubt he will make it that far.

As I said about 6 months ago, Johnson is a dead man walking and his pathetic defense of his behaviour at the dispatch box shows he knows it.

I guess we will find out in the next few weeks, if he has not triggered a leadership contest by then it will need the 1922 committee to receive enough letters.

But the whistleblowers must be coming to the end of their party ammunition by now.

If revelations keep coming the question might be asked why was it not all made pubic earlier, if it starts to look like a coup d'état with info withheld for political gain those currently unhappy with Boris might start to feel more sympathetic to his position. ;)

Yes all very terrible. Still, nowhere near in the same league as accepting half a million quid from a Chinese spy.   https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59984380

It depends what the bungs bought.

Buying a PM's favours seems a lot more serious to me.

Yes, Indeed. What could a Chinese spy get from a Labour minister for half a million. Wonder if we'll ever find out.

An opposition MP has so much power, where as a PM is utterly powerless (and incorruptible)

You seem to be missing the obvious fact that the current acting government is corrupt in just about everything it has done and keeps getting caught with its snouts in the trough.

She is well known in Westminster, the Times ran a story in 2017. The money was declared. A bigger question is, why do you think the story is back today? Nothing else happening in the news?

Looks like they had parties every week, and even installed a wine cooler in the garden (well, it was a hot summer). It is going to be filmed as "A Fridge Too Far".

The Good Law Project is taking legal action over the Met's refusal to investigate the parties.

Sajid Javid's brother is a Met Police Commander: I wonder if that is a factor in their inaction?
