Why the sudden willingness to behave casually with nukes?

Is it just my imagination or are we seeing more countries willing to use nukes as a bargaining chip?  Russia and China are both modernizing their inventories as well as creating harder to kill delivery systems and now the U.S. casually surfaces a Boomer in Taiwan?  Whatever happened to the idea that these things were never supposed to be used?

I have been wondering why, here in Britain, nuclear power stations are suddenly being hailed as the best thing ever and there are plans to build several more on our tiny island. Last thing I heard they were the worst thing ever and the sooner they were phased out and we increased our wind/water power, the better. This seems to have come completely out of the blue with no discussion.

(Sorry, and then, not quite the same thing as your OP. It's just that nuclear power seems to be being pushed everywhere at the moment).

I have thought about this and I conpare it to the Parable of Talents in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If you bury your talents then they will be given to someone else. I think if some nukes get fired it won't lead to all out nuclear war, but that only a handful would get used. This would be a learning opportunity for the whole human race to understand what a nuclear battle actually means and what we should do about it. Otherwise we are just going to keep going on in fear of a nuclear Apocalypse. Refuse to use your nukes and other more willing nations are going to pick up on that fear and take the job for themselves. Terrorists might even try to steal your forgotten and buried nukes.

Matthew 25

Quote

14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.

15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.

17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.

18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.

20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.

21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.

23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:

25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:

27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.

28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.

29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

It’s dick measuring time, because Putin and Xi are both Presidents for life and therefore jostling to see who’s the better PFL, Betty’s going to be gone soon, Boris is an eejit, Joe’s a stump tortoise, Scotty from Marketing’s someone who makes stump tortoises look effective, the Saudi king’s not looking too peaky either, Angela ‘sit the hell down and listen to me’ Merkel’s retiring and Mr Macaroni in France is so effective and influential Australis blew him off in a text.

The world situation is deeply unstable and the leading players are either thugs or idiots, so the one thinks it can take advantage of the other and conversely the later somehow thinks it can get one over the former.

Now make a list of the likely successors.

Charles, Kamala, Peter Dutton for starters.
You can see the improvement already ….

Charlie is a strange cocktail of an unimaginable certainty.

I can't help but wonder if anyone wants the top job at the moment. I've almost convinced the Dems won by accident.  Now the both parties timetables are off.

Albany Anthonese doesn’t want the job. So ScoMo leading to election victory with Dutton "right behind him" seems surprisingly plausible.

Boris' shadow is still too big.
