Why the Oath Keepers leader's indictment is just the tip of a dangerous iceberg

Though certainly deserving of our attention, it is important to recognize Oath Keepers as an example of a broader form of political extremism that has received too little attention for too long. These charges could portend increased Department of Justice attention for other patriot/militia groups and unaffiliated actors, though it seems unlikely that even a successful prosecution of the defendants in this indictment would meaningfully mitigate the threat of violence and criminality posed by the broader movement.

This indictment alone will not fix the permissive environment that exists for extremists to prepare for violent solutions to political differences in America. Law enforcement, prosecutors, politicians and Americans must acknowledge the insurrection for what it was and refuse to tolerate those who subvert democracy.

I don't believe everyone who went to the Capital that day meant to cause trouble. It only takes mischief from three people for a peaceful assembly to become classified as a riot,

so the definition does fit that a riot did occur that day.

However based on communique from several sources did indeed show that some were going to cause trouble that day, and separating those from those caught up in the mayhem day is still ongoing.

Well 20 of them have been charged with Seditious Conspiracy, which carries a 20 sentence. But I agree with you most of those individuals were not violent or destructive, they were just ignorant for going there in the first place. The judge that’s handling these cases also agrees in his opinion the true criminals were the Government Leadership that fomented the entire event and he feels Trump has responsibility for causing the entire event to occur!

I'm still p***ed the term "patriot" got co-opted by 'racist, stupid, anarchist, gun toting, beer swilling, meth cooking chuckle****s'. They're not the best of us, they're the very worst.
