You serious?

I could puke blood just imagining what this crap would look like if it exploded with Trump in the White House.

Thank God for the US has an American for president again, particularly in this moment.

On THAT we'll always disagree.  Trump had several opportunities to start new hostilities in the world and rejected them with the single exception of a airstrike, early in his first year.  IIRC, the only positive press he ever received in DC came after that muscle-flexing.  The fact is that Biden is a joke around the world and within the U.S.  It makes little difference how effective some believe him to be when the majority see him as feckless.  Afghanistan did great damage to America's credibility and fair or not, he was sitting in the chair when those decisions were made.

I'm curious though.  If you could sit in his office for a day, what would you have the U.S. do to save bloodshed in Ukraine?

The irony is, once he dies, the communist party in Russia is the next most popular group given that United Russia is much like the GOP is here: Entirely based around the whims of one specific strongman, and once that strongman is gone, the **** will hit the fan for them and their rival will swoop right in.

Maybe he's thinking of something in that kind of range :

Ukranian soldiers in the Donbas region have received a text saying Russia will defeat the Ukranian army in two days.

I truly hope sanctions work. But I am skeptical

It's a reasonable assumption.  He took Crimea and has supported rebellion in the east of Ukraine since 2014 and even with all the sanctions, here he comes again.  Maybe the Poles and Czechs will allow some bases for some of our people to train and equip Ukrainian fighters.  Sadly, it seems the only way to stop the little tyrant is to bleed his unfortunate citizenry while crippling the economy of his country as well as the personal accounts of his billionaire backers.

I know next to nothing about Ukraine but the signals coming from the people and the government there make it sound like they will fight.  If they do and thousands of civilians die while sending home hundreds or thousands of Russian troops in bags, I don't see how Putin "sells" that to his people.  I guess he has reached the point where he's willing to finally drop the appearances of democratic government.

That sounds like little Vlad is going for some "shock and awe".  What a bloody mess.

Definitely a form of psychological warfare and a concerning development, there is little reason to do that unless an invasion is imminent.

Strange that Putin didn't do this whilst his puppet was stiill in charge of the US .....

Former US President Donald Trump has called Vladimir Putin’s orders to send troops into Ukraine "genius".

Appearing on a right-wing radio show, Trump was asked about President Biden’s response to Putin’s sending military forces into Ukraine.

“I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius,’” Trump said.

“Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine - of Ukraine. Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful. So, Putin is now saying, ‘It’s independent,’ a large section of Ukraine.

"I said, ‘How smart is that?’ And he’s gonna go in and be a peacekeeper. That’s strongest peace force … We could use that on our southern border”.

The Republican former president continued to praise Putin later on, while disparaging his successor

(from BBC  news feed)

But maybe even Putin didn't apprecite how dumb Frump really was and that he'd actually admire someone invading another country and wishing he;d done the same?

Faux disinfo victims, here's what you'd know if you were informed by actual news instead of Putin's agitprop:

The EU has announced a sanctions plan. They note that other sanctions are possible in case the invasion occurs.

The sanctions are aimed at:

  • 351 members of the Russian parliament who supported the recognition along with 11 people who proposed it
  • Banks that finance Russian military and other operations in these areas
  • The ability of the Russian state and government to access EU capital and financial markets and services
  • Trade from the two breakaway regions in the EU and from the EU

First reactions to escalation of Ukrainian crisis (and let it be repeated that the escalation was Putin's one-sided decision), from around the world:

Germany: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz shut down the Nord Stream 2 pipeline

United Kingdom: Prime Minister Boris Johnson has unveiled the "first tranche" of British sanctions on Russia. The United Kingdom will sanction five Russian banks and three people

European Union: The European Commission has proposed sanctions to EU member states similar to those following the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

United States: Following the first set of sanctions announced Monday, the White House said it would impose additional "significant" sanctions on Tuesday.

Turkey: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to recognize the breakaway eastern Ukrainian territories, calling it "unacceptable" and saying it was contrary to the Minsk agreements.

That should work. Sanctions ended communism in Cuba.........wait a minute.

It's a power move - nothing more, nothing less. I find "fear of COVID" to be very unlikely for Putin, as he is most likely vaccinated as much as he possibly can be.

He is vaccinated, with Pfizer, not Sputnik :D but he's still afraid. Is it fear of person who's got underlying issues or fear of something else, who knows.

He doesn't look well at all.

Which is how Cuba grew into regional power, able to annex Florida.

Besides, communism (or that, what they claimed is socialism under communist leadership) ended in USSR long ago. It's kleptocracy now under apparently irrational leadership.

This must be how Ukraine feels right now, with it's erstwhile EU friends who egged it along, piloting the sled....

I personally think if we all had troops massed in Ukraine that it would of worked as a deterrent to war. But no one really wanted to do that

I'm one of those who thinks that's a really dangerous choice.  While there's no doubt that he needs to be resisted, setting up a situation where Russian troops are being killed by U.S. troops - and vice-versa - creates too dangerous a chance of escalation based on a pi$$ing contest.  A few years ago in Syria, a mercenary force of Russians and Syrians tried to take a position near an oilfield that was being held by U.S. forces.  They tried it without air cover.  Over 300 Russian Mercs died.  Putin was able to avoid embarrassment because he could claim they weren't Russian.  If that happened in this situation, to either side, there would be no easy way to back down from that.

At this point I say let the Ukrainians bleed his troops.  Help them do it to the max extent possible without actually taking on a combat role.  Even THAT could get out of hand but at some point he could force us to choose a very dangerous option and because we know this we should be moving now to significantly strengthen Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, and the other, new NATO countries.  Build bases, boost their economies, train them up with our weapons systems, IOW, create a force posture that he will not be willing to tangle with.  The downside to that plan is that he could do the same in our backyard.  Imagine Russian naval and missile bases in Venezuela, Cuba, Central America.

This has all the makings of a really poor outcome for the world.

All these western diplomatic efforts have done is buy Russia more time to prepare for the invasion of Ukraine.

Wrong.

They bought time for Ukraine to prepare for defense.

Putin was preparing this since before Crimea. Obviously.

Pary affiliations aside, it's the very same Oligarchy running the place--in case you haven't noticed. When Putin's gone, another even worse one will take the reins of power. We'll, probably, miss his restraint.

There should be an emergency NATO security session in which they announce Ukraine’s full membership effective immediately.

If Putin wants to play brinkmanship, let’s find out just what lies over that edge.

It would also be in accordance with Budapest memorandum.

I genuinely see him as the type that if he can't get what he wants, nobody else can have it either.

I would not trust that move to go over nearly as well as one would hope.

The problem with that nonsensical rhetoric is there is actual proof that shows it to be nonsensical.  Feel free to post a similar list of actions against Russia by our current administration.

We're not in the right time for a world war. The COVID pandemic, political division in the US, racial tensions are very high, and similar problems we have with both China and Iran (they're deciding whether or not to join Russia and 7 other adversaries against the US and its 190 allies or supporters), and global climate change. Whoever wants a "world holy nuke race war for god, oil and profits" are clearly sick in the head (Russia's Vladimir Putin sure is).

There are some congress members stating Russia is still a communistic country or a backward culture, then they throw in China is responsible for the devastation of the working middle class for over 4 decades by stealing our manufacturing factory industrial base from our country, and Iran's Islamic republic regime is very threatening to the US ever since the 1979-81 US embassy hostage standoff crisis. And yes, "COVID could been a biological weapon designed by our enemies or adversaries against the US and its allies" which is said by the same enemies or adversaries about the US "planted COVID on Wuhan, Tehran and maybe Bergamo in Italy" 2 years ago this week

Biden said, (paraphrase), if you invade part, we'll just section you, and you can keep the territory. Like with the Crimea.

And Putin agreed, so now Russia is going to just claim another part of Ukraine and no ones going to stop them. Other the with, ultimately, symbolic sanctions.

The coming WW3 between the 3 largest countries in population (China), size (Russia) and power (the USA), whether this is a 3 way war or Russia or China chooses sides based on their own interests in selecting either one or the other vs them.
