Seem like Helen been gone for quite a while now , same with Manwon who actually started the thread, not sure what happened with them.

I hope they are okay. I know Manwon was sort of on the older side of the lifespan

The thing that seems to be overlooked here is that Russia has a history of justifiable anxiety over foreign invasion.  No single country lost more lives in WWII, IIRC.  They have that tendency inbred and we ignore it at our peril.

They have their Black Ships too.  Kruschev pointed out that USA had marched on Russia, but they've never put soldiers on US soil.

To be fair though the USSR would of lost far less lives if they would of employed strategies and tactics other than massed infantry assaults and human wave tactics.  When your choice of how to handle a minefield includes just keep sending penal battalions into the minefield until there are no more mines it becomes a bit more difficult to feel bad for their high loss of life.

But if you got enough people sending endless waves till the other side runs out of ammunition or the barrels of their guns and cannons start to melt from over use is effective.

You would think he would at least chime in on the forum once in a while , but maybe he is where he has no access.

Russia planning ‘pincer movement’ to unite North and South forces and continue advance

Speaking on Sky News, Mr Stone said: “There are so many different front lines in this war”

He continued: “It is misleading to see as a singular front line along the east of the country with the Ukrainians on one side and Russians on the other”

[...]

Mr Stone then added: “In towns and villages across the east and across the north and across the south, there are multiple front lines, multiple fights taking place and that is ongoing every single day".

He also said: “We have travelled to the far east of the country to towns that are pretty much encircled now by Russian troops”

Are we really expected to believe that Russia is failing? Seems to me that they are about to overwhelm Ukrainian forces from many directions.

Younger than me, but maybe too old to volunteer.  He has been a soldier or private contractor in theaters of war most of his career.

I also wonder about Helen.   I would bet that she in nearer the thick of things than most of us will ever get.

The pincer move is what they've been trying since the start of this new offensive. They've made almost no ground and Ukraine are getting resupplied every day with better weapons.

Yes, Russia is currently failing, and failing spectacularly.

It's not for us to police the world and meddle in conflicts between Russia and it's former Soviet satellites.

Well of course it is.  Why do you think we don't waste money on health care but have a military that is designed to fight on two fronts and win. Russia has the second largest air force in the world, but at number one, we top it by 3X.   We can't just leave all of that stuff sitting idle.   Just be glad Donald Trump is not still President or he would have nuked Moscow into glowing rubble, or so he said.

Zelenskyy demands 'global control' over Russia's nuclear capabilities after 'completely irresponsible actions'

"We discussed all the dangers created by Russia and ways to possibly influence the situation to protect Europe and the world from completely irresponsible actions of the Russian Federation," the president said. He then called for a global takeover of Russia's nuclear capabilities.

"I believe that after all that the Russian military has done in the Chernobyl zone and at the Zaporizhzhia power plant, no one in the world can feel safe knowing how many nuclear facilities, nuclear weapons and related technologies the Russian state has," Zelenskyy said. "If Russia has forgotten what Chernobyl is, it means that global control over Russia's nuclear facilities, and nuclear technology is needed."

How he intends to establish ''global control'' over Russia's nuclear capabilities he doesn't mention, though.

Maybe if Russia returns some of the nukes given away by Ukr in return for Ukr security agreement by Russia, that would solved both problems, no?

Helen decided to step away from the forum for a while as she was becoming frustrated with the pro-putin progaganda being allowed here and her not being allowed to post local news because it isn't in English.

No matter what  happens from here in, Russia will come out of this war in a much much weaker state than it entered.

Economically weakened domestically, militarily exposed, and internationally and economically isolated - bad times ahead for the Russians.

In any other country the 'architect' would have long gone.

That's actually quite sad and she has a point. Shame she was a brilliant poster.

I remember that, that was some bullsh!t right there, especially since (I recall) it was actually translated from Croatian into English, so it was in English per the translation, just not originally so.

Admittedly, that IS going to be hard to establish.  It's definitely not going to happen now and probably not anytime soon but after all these threats of nuclear retaliation coming from Russia, what should happen, if we survive this, is a global moratorium on all nuclear warheads followed by the total closure of all silos and dismantling of all weapons under the severe scrutiny of the UN and it's semi-branch, the IAEA.

Without the threat of nukes Russia would have tucked tail and ran back to Moscow by now because it's pretty clear they are getting battered at a conventional level.

For those who have been following the conflict closely, the deployment of the new M142 HIMARS system to Ukraine by the USA will be THE game changer for Ukraine if they are used properly and are provided in sufficient quantity.  They will back-foot the Russians completely and remove the threat of Russian artillery and GRADs, leaving the field wide open.

She made a lot of interesting points, but her shortcoming was that she was naive towards Putin's capabilities and intentions. For example, pre-invasion she was extremely adamant about the fact that Putin would not invade, when it was overwhelmingly obvious that he had full intentions on invading.

Well in her defense, plenty of politicians and defense specialists believed the same.
