Are we willing to risk war with Russia for Ukraine? Is it worth it?

To deter another land hungry megalomaniac, yes!

No, I'm serious. Russia, from their perspective, economically and defensively, can not afford to let an independent Ukraine exist. Barring direct military intervention by the West, Russia is going pound Ukrainian infrastructure into dust, area after area, city after city that resist, until the modern Ukranian lifestyle is unsustainable. A net exporter of food stuff will become a net importer and there will be a 19th century style famine in a country with a twenty-first century sized population. This will persist for years,  until the Russian system itself collapses under the weight of it's own inadequacies and of it's sins against the world. Russia will be reduced to the sort of pariah State status not seen since Red China at the height of it's Cultural Revolution.

Incipient Ukrainian Nationalism horrifies them and their ultimate goal is to stamp it out. That fellow Slavs could have this level of enthusiasms and patriotism for an alternate social model bewilders and frightens them. Mother Russia brooks no rivals.

Russia has 4 times seen off invasions by European nations due to having a safety buffer in Eastern Europe.

Germany x2, France x1, Sweden x1.

Its pretty obvious that with NATO creeping ever nearer this war is to put back in place a safety buffer. The Baltics and Poland are in danger, probably Romania too.

If Russia would leave the cold war mindset than they wouldn't feel the need for a buffer.

No one in modern society gives a **** about invading Russia

The only reason people want to be part of NATO now are due to Russia invading non-nato Ukraine

Yeah, it's all over the internet. It's ludicrous a country armed to teeth with nukes is terrified someone will invade. They're more concerned, I think, with their ever-shrinking options to invade anyone without major repercussions.

Seems either Ukranian special forces or some kind of Ukranian resistance blew a railroad bridge near Melitopol that was used extensively by Russians to move supplies towards the front lines.

Russians are making slow advances from advances from the north, essentially just south and west from Izium, in the Donbas front but from reports Russian losses of men and materials are high and it's not clear how much longer the Russians can sustain the offensive.  Other attempts to advance by the Russian military have all failed.

Russia has restarted assaults on the Azovstal Steel Works facility, no progress has been made yet.

An intercepted Russian radio communication has two Russian soldiers talking about how there are over 25,000 killed Russian soldiers so far.

In what is rather concerning Russian state media is seemingly preparing the Russian population for nuclear war.

Not denying that this is true but what sources have you been looking at to suggest that? Apparently WION has an article about a TV host comforting viewers by saying "We all die someday" amidst fears of the nuclear war, but beyond that I can't find too much.

By creating a land border with NATO where one previously didn't exist.

Well, given their performance the last couple of months, I'd believe that of Russian strategists.

There are various stuff that can be found online from various Russian media sources.  Finding all the snippets will be a bit of a pain.  But there is this clip from Russian state media.

There has been a sharp increase in the talk of using nuclear weapons over the past few days from the Russian side.

There is no way that Russia can lose a conventional war against Ukraine unless NATO intervenes.

Russia is doing a pretty good job of losing already, failed to over throw the Ukranian government, the Ukranian military is still just as strong if not stronger than before the invasion, only major city Russia has taken is Kherson which the Ukranian military is slowly advancing on and now coming under Ukranian attack.

At this rate Russia is going to lose the war.

Russia sees that Ukraine is becoming more and more independent and rushes to the EU and wants to cancel our entry there. And for Putin it is better to destroy the country and control it than to let it escape to another Union. The occupying Russians were surprised to find that Ukrainians live better than Russians and even alone wrote on the door of the house "and who allowed you to live beautifully"?
So for Russia, either Ukraine enters the sphere of Russia or does not exist as a nation, since they do not recognize us as a separate nation. For them, we must be eternal Little Russians, as Catherine II wished.

The problem is much deeper and goes back to distant history. Putin adheres to old instructions and cannot think differently:

Spoiler

From a letter from Catherine II to Prince Alexander Vyazemsky on the occasion of his appointment as Prosecutor General of the Senate

February 1764

Little Russia, Livonia and Finland are provinces that are governed by the privileges confirmed by him, and it would be very obscene to violate them by suddenly renouncing everyone, however, calling them foreign and treating them on the same basis is more than a mistake, but one can call them with credibility, stupidity. These provinces, also Smolensk, must by the easiest means be brought to the point that they become Russified and stop looking like a wolf towards the forest. Moreover, the attack is very easy, if reasonable people are elected leaders in those provinces; when there is no hetman in Little Russia, then we must try to make the name of hetmans disappear forever, not only a person who was promoted to this dignity ..

No, he can not. No compromise or peace with Russia will last. All that will happen is that territory will be surrendered to buy armistice for a few years and nothing more.

Whose territory will be surrendered, Ukrainian? We are determined to win. The Russians and the DPR population surrenders so as not to be killed. They are happy to surrender, and those who marauded also do not want to fight and strive to return back with the loot. And let the fools die on our land for Putin's ideas.

Russia warns West: Don't test our patience

LONDON, April 28 (Reuters) - Russia on Thursday warned the West that there would be a tough military response to any further attack on Russian territory, accusing the United States and its key allies of undermining European security by openly inciting Ukraine to assault Russia.

[...]

"In the West, they are openly calling on Kyiv to attack Russia including with the use of weapons received from NATO countries," Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters in Moscow.

"I don't advise you to test our patience further."

Should the West continue it's proxy war against Russia?
