I think Octopus could be classified as sentient, I don't think they should be eaten.  We don't (most of us on the planet) eat dogs.   It is a bad idea.

You mean rich people don't eat dogs.  In poorer countries they eat dogs.  It's only where you're rich and bored enough that certain animals are deemed too cute or too smart to eat.

edit to add:  I do feel kind of funny every time I eat octopus because they are so smart and cool, but I still usually order them if I go out for sushi.

To be fair... ALL animals have a form of sentience. Self awareness is what we should be looking at. They are different and it's a shame how people throw the two terms around as if they are the same.

Sentience in the most basic is it feels pain and it reacts.

Self awareness it knows it is it own being in the world.

Plenty of poor countries have animals which are culturally off-limits for a variety of reasons. This really isn't a class issue.

A Spanish company is planning to set up such a venture within the next two years - but is it really a good idea ?

Seems to be a good idea if they can pull it off.

Cows in some parts of India for religious reasons. Do you have another example?

They are sentient and SELF AWARE. That has been proven over and over again. In fact there is a theory that if mankind had not come to prominence there's a chance Octopi could have become the dominant species. And to be honest unless we eat all of them they have a good chance of becoming dominant anyways after the human race destroys itself.

Not a good chance.   A very slime one but still a chance.
