P&O Ferries sacks all 800 crew members across entire fleet

The firm, bought by Dubai-based logistics giant DP World in 2019, said it has suspended sailings “for the next few days”.

Workers currently onboard ships were instructed by unions not to leave with chaos at many ports as a result of services being pulled.

A spokesperson for P&O Ferries said the company was currently not a “viable business” and 800 seafarers had been handed immediate severance notices with compensation packages for the “lack of advance notice”.

Ministers have warned P&O Ferries it could face an unlimited fine and be stripped of Government contracts after the “appalling” and potentially criminal sacking of 800 seafarers.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said the firm had “lost the trust of the public and given business a bad name” and the firm “appears to have failed” to have followed the law on making large numbers of staff redundant.

Downing Street urges P&O Ferries boss to resign after 800 sackings

Downing Street has called for the chief executive of P&O Ferries to resign over the sacking of 800 workers, and pledged to push through legislation next week to force the company to reverse the move and pay its crew the minimum wage.

The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, had earlier promised action after Peter Hebblethwaite’s performance in front of the transport and business committees, which he said was “brazen, breathtaking, and showed incredible arrogance”.

Hebblethwaite admitted to MPs on Thursday that his company broke the law by sacking the 800 workers without consultation.

Dover: Long queues as ferry services to Calais and Dunkirk disrupted by weather and ship shortages

Ferry passengers heading to France have faced long queues amid disruption to cross-Channel services from Dover to Calais and Dunkirk.

The delays were blamed on a shortage of ferries and bad weather on Friday and overnight, as well as measures implemented to control the movement of HGVs in the area.

Capacity at the Port of Dover was already under strain following the suspension of P&O services, with three of the company's vessels at berth there.

P&O breaks promise of a full refund for 'any customer' who cancels booking during disruption

P&O Ferries has been refusing to issue refunds to customers who cancel their bookings, breaking a pledge made on its website.

The company is struggling to restart its ferry service almost three weeks after sacking 800 crew to save money.

With Easter approaching, seven of P&O’s eight ships have yet to pass full safety inspections and remain stuck in port.

On POferries.com, the company provides customers with sailing updates and makes the following reassurance: “Any customers booked to travel during this period of disruption who choose not to travel can have a full refund”.

The problem is that many of P&O’s customers complain this isn’t true.

The Dubai-based owner of P&O Ferries has been accused of behaving like “corporate gangsters” after celebrating record-breaking profits just months after sacking 800 of its UK based workers without notice.

DP World, which is ultimately owned by the Dubai royal family, said in March that firing 786 P&O seafarers and replacing them with much cheaper agency workers was the only way to ensure the “future viability” of the historic ferry business.

P&O Ferries will not face criminal proceedings for mass sacking of staff

P&O Ferries will not face criminal proceedings over its mass sacking of almost 800 workers earlier this year, it has emerged, sparking calls for a change in the law.

The company provoked public anger and was hauled in front of MPs to answer questions when it sacked hundreds of workers without notice in March.

The business secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, had asked the Insolvency Service to investigate whether any criminal or civil offences had been committed.

But in a statement, the government agency said it had determined there was “no realistic prospect of a conviction”.
