A barrel containing a body has been found near Las Vegas - exposed as the shoreline of nearby Lake Mead recedes during a drought.

Based on personal items found inside the heavily corroded container, the individual died in the 1980s, homicide detective Lieutenant Ray Spencer said.

The barrel - which looks like an industrial storage drum - was spotted by boaters on Sunday afternoon, police said.

National Park Service rangers then searched an area near the lake's Hemenway Harbor and found the skeletal remains.

'More human remains' found in drought-hit Lake Mead

More human remains are reported to have been found at drought-hit Lake Mead near Las Vegas - a week after a body in a barrel was discovered, which police believe may be linked to the Mafia.

Park rangers received a report that "human skeletal remains" had been found on Saturday at the reservoir, which is facing record-low water levels.

It comes a week after a barrel containing the body of a man who had been shot was revealed on a newly-exposed section of Lake Mead.

Police said the killing was thought to have happened between the mid-1970s and the early 1980s because the victim was wearing shoes manufactured during that period.

One good thing to come from this endless drought. Hopefully some families can get closure.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas is being flooded with lore about organized crime after a second set of human remains emerged within a week from the depths of a drought-stricken Colorado River reservoir just a 30-minute drive from the notoriously mob-founded Strip.

“There’s no telling what we’ll find in Lake Mead,” former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said Monday. “It’s not a bad place to dump a body.”

Goodman, as a lawyer, represented mob figures including the ill-fated Anthony “Tony the Ant” Spilotro before serving three terms as a martini-toting mayor making public appearances with a showgirl on each arm.

Another body just found.

It is the third body to be found since May in the mud of the shrinking shoreline between Nevada and Arizona, about 30 minutes away from the notoriously mob-founded Las Vegas Strip.

It is too soon to identify the gender of the person or a time and cause of death, Clark County coroner, Melanie Rouse, said on Tuesday.

4th set of human remains found in Lake Mead

Human remains were again found in Lake Mead, the country's largest reservoir that continues to shrink amid a decades-long drought, officials announced Sunday.

According to the National Park Service, someone made the discovery at the park's Swim Beach in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, on the Nevada side, around 11:15 a.m. Saturday. This marks the fourth time since May that human remains were found in Lake Mead, where water levels continue to recede at historic levels.

With the help of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's dive team, park rangers responded and set up a perimeter to retrieve the remains, the NPS said.

Body?  You mean Bodies, plural...  What gets dumped in a Lake in Las Vegas STAYS dumped in a lake in Las Vegas... (Until it is found and there is a major criminal investigation).

Body of man who drowned 20 years ago found in drought-stricken Lake Mead is identified

Human remains that were discovered in Lake Mead in May have been identified as those of a 42-year-old man who was reported to have drowned 20 years ago, a coroner has found.

The United States' largest reservoir has seen its water level fall to historic lows through the summer due to drought conditions.

Several discoveries were made since 1 May, including skeletal remains.

The Clark County coroner in Las Vegas identified the remains, which were found at Callville Bay, as those of Thomas Erndt, spokesman Dan Kulin said.

"The cause and manner of Mr Erndt's death is undetermined."
