Royal Navy to be the first European force to field maritime ballistic missile defence capability.

Recommended Posts

Today the MoD has announced the Type 45 destroyers will be upgraded to intercept ballistic missiles. The destroyers will be the first European warships with a full sensor-shooter BMD intercept capability.

Upgrading the defensive capability of the Type 45 fleet was promised in the Defence Command Paper, as part of the 2021 Integrated Review and the Sea Viper Evolution programme follows the recent contract to add Sea Ceptor (CAAM) missiles to the Type 45. Design work is underway to increase total missile capacity from 48 to 72 missiles in a refit programme between 2026-32.
