European leaders do not suggest French election result is an anti EU vote.

"German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said French voters “have sent a strong vote of confidence in Europe today. I am happy that we will continue our good cooperation”.

"Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tweeted his congratulations to Macron: “The citizens have chosen a France committed to a free, strong and fair EU. Democracy wins. Europe wins.”

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who along with Macron and Scholz is seen as forming a powerful trio of pro-EU leaders, also said the re-election was “wonderful news for all of Europe”.

Today the French result has been met with rather fewer comments from the same individuals suggesting the election is also an EU popularity vote. 

 "Sunday’s runoff elections have led to an unprecedented political situation in France: President Emmanuel Macron’s coalition has fallen well short of a majority, leaving no single party dominant in the chamber. The left made sharp gains but so did the far right, which surged well beyond expectations and won nearly 90 National Assembly seats.

"Final results provided by the Interior Ministry give Macron’s coalition 245 of the chamber’s 577 seats. That’s 44 seats short of an absolute majority and more than a hundred-seat drop from the 346 seats it held until this weekend’s elections."

"Perhaps the greatest shock of the night came from the other end of the political spectrum, with Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally winning a record 89 seats.

That dwarfs pollsters’ predictions and marks more than a tenfold increase from the party’s eight current seats."

Macron faces 5 years of gridlock after stunning parliamentary defeat.

Voters massively came out in support of the far-right National Rally and the left-wing coalition NUPES, depriving Macron of a ruling majority.

On Sunday, Macron’s supporters were left reeling after several party big guns, including the speaker of the National Assembly Richard Ferrand and Christophe Castaner, Macron’s party whip in the outgoing chamber, lost their seats. Health Minister Brigitte Bourguignon and Environment Minister Amélie de Montchalin also lost their seats — which will likely force their resignations, as has been convention since the Sarkozy era.
