European Parliament votes to ban combustion engine cars from 2035.

"Lawmakers in the European Parliament plenary voted Wednesday to mandate that all new car and van sales should be zero emissions from 2035 as part of efforts to clean up road transport.

Lawmakers backed the final report on revised vehicle CO2 emission standards legislation with 339 in favor, 249 against and with 24 abstentions.

The legislation is a key part of the Fit for 55 package and mandates that carmakers should reduce their fleetwide emission averages by 100 percent from 2035, with interim steps in 2025 and 2030. Parliament's position maintains the Commission's original 2035 phaseout date."

After many commit to the 2035 policy Germany perform a U turn.

"Germany's finance minister has said the country will not back EU plans that amount to a ban on the sale of new combustion engine cars from 2035, arguing such a move would shut the door for “technology openness” and effectively eradicate synthetic fuels as an alternative. “Synthetic fuels are a climate-neutral option for combustion engine cars, which globally will continue to be used for a long time to come,”

Another example of making the Brussels system work for you.  Let others be backed into a corner and then do something more practical and less disruptive yourself. ;)

You have to admire the Germans. :D

Once again, EU countries show that they are independent and sovereign - it is a shame the the Brits swallowed the lie that they were ruled by Brussels.

Funny, was sure the French would back out first, closely followed by the Italians.

Wonder how the EU will punish them...... what am I talking about... they run it.

What is the point of getting together and agreeing rules if they will be independently ignored. Surly the idea would be to wait until rules could be found that everybody was happy with from the start and then implement. What is the point of an EU that is designed to invent laws that are then ignored.

Had the UK done this while a member we would have been labeled obstructive and not recognising the spirit of the EU.

One rule for one and another for the chosen few.;)

Of course Germany has pulled out of this, a large portion of German Industry is based on the Internal Combustion Engine, and the big German brands came too late to the EV market, other brands have the edge.

Theyre gonna have to make the move at some point though.

One problem they have is that their car makers have been able to charge more for their product, and persuade customers they make a premium product, because of their car engines.

A lot of the desirability is due to what's under the bonnet, when that is replaced with something that could go in a washing machine the kudos is diminished the brand devalued and justification for the prices harder to make.

What the Germans want is to keep making halo cars with their much admired internal combustion engines.

The risk is will petrol heads still want a GTI without a petrol engine or a Porsche, or a BMW M car, various Audi's, AMG Merc's.

Much hard work developing brands perceived cool factor via race heritage and engineering could disappear almost over night.

For those willing to pay extra for this history losing it might change the way they look at a product.

A bit like watches, its the wind up's that people will pay more for.  ;)
