Emergency services were called in the early hours of Sunday to the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, on the edge of East London, Eastern Cape province. Authorities say they are going to carry out post mortems as soon as possible. Reports say there are no obvious injuries on the bodies.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana told the Newzroom Africa rolling news channel in the country that young people were among the dead.

Reuters reported him saying they were aged between 18 and 20, but there are also reports they may have been younger, with AP saying they were reportedly attending a party to celebrate the end of winter school exams.

"It is either something they ingested which will point to poisoning, whether its food or drinks, or it is something they inhaled," Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for Eastern Cape’s provincial community safety department said by phone on Monday, ahead of a toxicology report still being awaited.

He said hookah pipes were visible in CCTV footage of the scene.

"We are ruling out a stampede," he added, after initial media reports suggested this may have been the cause.

Poor kids, I feel sorry for their families. Yes, poison was the first thing that came to mind. The question is who did it, and why?

I don't know what kind of 'night club' it was but sometimes homemade liquor can be deadly if you don't know what you're doing.

Enyobeni Tavern: South African arrests made over mystery teen deaths

South Africa police have arrested three people in connection with the deaths of 21 people, mostly teenagers, at an East London tavern last month.

They died mysteriously after collapsing, and police are still investigating the cause.

The suspects, including the Enyobeni tavern owner, were detained in connection with allegedly selling alcohol to underage children.

The owner of Enyobeni, aged 52, is due to appear in court next week, while two of his employees have been given the option of paying a fine of about $120 (£100) for allegedly selling alcohol to people under the age of 18.

The other two people who were arrested are aged 33 and 34.

ABC News is now reporting that methanol was found in the blood of all of the deceased. The toxic chemical has been identified as a possible cause of their deaths. Investigations are continuing to see if the levels found were enough to kill them.
