He might have seen an earthquake light seeing that he was around New Zealand. There was a earthquake at Hawke's Bay in Feb 1931 so New Zealand was seismically active at the time.

This picture does not represent the Hawke's Bay earthquake.

I believe he saw a some kind of optical-weather phenomenon, he couldn't define at that time.

You added aliens to it, there are no aliens in UFO or OWP only wishing true believers think so.
