City of Orlando ‘Regrets’ Impact of Fireworks Promo

The City of Orlando issued a statement Saturday after sending out a promotion for the city’s fireworks display which claimed that people “probably” don’t want to celebrate because America is full of “hate,” and adding “we can’t blame them.”

The municipality’s City News email on Friday opened with a downer premise, an appeal to come on out to see fireworks for their own sake, despite there being nothing good to like about the United States.

Now you don't have to use second and third-hand information.  Note that the article is an opinion piece and not endorsed by the publication.  In other words:  in other words, there's no guarantee of its validity.

Orlando's screw-up was the doing of the city government.  No party affiliation there.

Doug

P.S.:  I think our big problem is assuming that all members of the other party constitute a monolithic block, that they're all the same.  Not all Republicans think like EM, thank god.  And very few Democrats are stupid enough to use the F-word in a public announcement.  We should use the average of each party as representative of what it is, not the extremes., even if it's the extremes that end up in government.

Gonna disagree with you on this one el. no big surprise.

Most liberals love America, its beautiful, we want to keep it safe.  We believe it can stand the scrutiny of truth and that if we were not always perfect, we could learn from tour past. In fact we want to make it the paradise it deserves to be, and the leader and role model for the  rest of the  world.

Its just some of the people we share it with we have given up on.

I was a Precinct Judge in our recent primary election.  Oklahoma has open elections for the Democratic ballot and closed for the Republican ballot, decided by party.  In other words, only registered Republicans can vote a Republican ballot, but the Democratic ballot is open to Democrats,Independents and Libertarians.  The voter has to declare which party he/she is in.

We got so we could usually tell the voter's party as they walked in the door.  The Democrats, Independents and Libertarians had little pieces of paper reminding them who they had decided to vote for.  The Republicans came in and sometimes weren't sure which party they were registered in and had never heard of some of the names on the ballot (It was a long list.).  To be fair, there were some Democrats who didn't have a clue, either.

One lady came in, signed in as a Democrat, looked over the ballot and asked if she could vote Republican.  She looked over a sample ballot and decided she didn't want to vote at all.  Once you sign in, you have officially voted and there must be a paper ballot to match the number signed in.  We finally convinced her to run a blank ballot through the machine.  She then regaled us for forty-five minutes on the defects of our local city government.  I met her at a local restaurant two days later and again got the 45-minute story.

Another lady had lost her ID.  She was on the voter rolls, but without an ID she couldn't vote a regular ballot.  We offered her a provisional ballot, but she didn't want that and decided not to vote at all.

All in all, it was a long, rather boring day.  There will be a Republican run-off in August.  Only Republicans can vote in it.  I'm wondering to how many lost Democrats we are going to have to explain why they can't vote.

And this is the electorate.  I shudder for our future as a democracy.

Those people everybody likes to praise, the founding fathers, were some of the most brilliant minds of our age.  We want more people like that.

Instead we have conspiracy theorists and con men pandering to ignorance  with a barely educated populace who will fall for anything.

The left has Balkanized America into two groups. The fascists and the anti-fascists. Anyone who disagrees with the left is a fascist.

I don’t know if I can even think of a significant issue Democrats have supported lately that they didn’t claim opposition to was racist. You got one for me?

You can’t be for more taxes and bigger government and still be liberal. The more of those two things you have the less liberty you have. Liberty is the root word of liberal. You can’t have more control and more liberty, therefore regardless of the term being hijacked by democrats/socialists they are not liberal.  Their inability to tolerate independent thought and ideas that they don’t agree with is also a key reason why they are not liberal.

There are a few people here who I once considered liberal. They all slowly gave in to the dark side.

These days being liberal is a hazy dream. Nobody that backs either of our main political parties can consider themselves liberal as neither one in practice supports actual liberal values.

Liberal is about running the government that benefits the most people, not about making the most money for big business which can take are of itself - it already owns most of the politicians.  Liberal does not necessarily mean higher taxes but it does mean readjusting how the government spends money.  It means putting people first, keeping them free to live their lives without government interference.

Propaganda. The only thing liberal about that is being liberal with the money of others. The government that provides the most benefit for the most people is one that provides the easiest path for employers to create more jobs and not government handouts. IMO welfare is not the greatest value I can get from government, it is that I keep and do as I will with what I earn and the same for others, with a safety net for those that are unable, not unwilling, to do for themselves.

Part of government's legitimate role is to prevent abuse of employees by employers.

Welfare should not be used if business gets off its a-- and provides jobs and a decent living wage.  But when business doesn't do its job, then there may be no alternative to welfare.

My daughter is totally and permanently disabled.  She has been fighting Social Security and incompetent attornies for seven years.  She qualifies for $30K in back benefits, but has been made a "settlement offer" of $15K to settle now instead of waiting another seven years to collect the $30K and still coming up $15K short.  This kind of ethics is what Social Security calls standard practice.  Cheat a disabled person out of $15K because they are too desperate to fight back.  And your tax money pays these crooks.  And the Republican Senate refuses to pass reform legislation or even introduce it.

Most reforms will not raise taxes, but result in more-efficient use of what the govt already has.  Why spend $5.6 TRILLION on a needless war (which we lost anyway and knew we would from the start) when it would have paid for the entire Medicare-for-All program?

I pay $8000 a year for medical expenses in most years (This year is higher due to six surgeries with one more left to go.).  That money would have paid my share of Medicare-for-All.  Yes, it's called a tax, but it replaces insurance premiums and expenses not covered by insurance companies.  The total out-payment is less as a tax.  But "tax" is a dirty word, so conservatives (who can't do arithmetic) will pay three times as much to an insurance company so they don't have to pay the government.  I don't have that kind of money to waste, so do what you want with your own money, but don't spend mine for me.

One other thought:  Nobody has even proposed any changes to bring socialism to this country.  AOC is one representative in a 435-member House and Sanders is one person in a 100-member Senate.  They'd have to convince an awful lot of people to go along with anything like that.  UNLESS:  their colleagues wouldn't recognize socialism if they saw it.  Somehow, I suspect you wouldn't, either.  As of right now, socialism has a zero-percent chance of being introduced.

What is constantly being proposed and pushed through by both democrats and republicans is bigger government with more control.  I'm not a republican or a democrat so assuming I think one side is the good guys and the other the bad guys is incorrect.  I never brought socialism up.

But you sure managed to misunderstand it.

It probably would be a good idea to sunset more laws.  Also, outright repeal some older non-functioning or mis-functioning laws.  The student loan program needs to be replaced with a better way of funding education.  For over 70 years we have had the goal of establishing local campuses within 50 miles of everybody so students could live at home for at least two years.  That would cut the financial bight.  When I started college, our local community college used two old junior high buildings  That could be done again..

I have asked several people on here if they could name even one law that forced conservatives to do something they didn't want to do.  So far, nobody has thought of an answer.  Can you?

You're right.  If you go beyond grade 12 then you should pay for it, and if you don't you shouldn't be forced to subsidize a choice made by someone else.  Apparently you think it's just fine that the government take $15k out of my pay every year just because I work in exchange for nothing.  I don't.
