Liz Truss last night revealed plans to cut pay for public sector workers – including teachers and nurses – outside the wealthy southeast in a bid to save £11bn. Labour said the idea would sound the death-knell for the government’s “levelling-up” agenda by widening the regional income gap.

The Tory leadership frontrunner presented her plan as a “war on Whitehall waste” that would also see civil service holiday entitlements slashed.

But she was forced to admit that she would have to replace national pay settlements with regional awards for all public sector workers over a period of many years.

The Foreign Secretary announced last night plans to save up to £11billion under proposals that would scrap national pay scales for Civil Service jobs and make salaries reflect local rates.

But she said that some £8.8billion of that saving came from introducing regional pay deals for all public sector workers.

Her team told the Times that the changes would only affect new starters but supporters of leadership rival Rishi Sunak have questioned whether it was possible.

There was also criticism of how it would be seen in the Red Wall seats the party took from Labour at the last election in the North and Midlands with promises of levelling-up, at a time of growing cost-of-living fears.

Poorer pupils in England and Wales are “significantly” behind their peers, according to a report.

The Education Policy Institute (EPI) study found that in 2019, prior to the pandemic, the gap between poorer pupils and their peers was 22-23 months in Wales and about 18 months in England.

The gap has narrowed slightly in both countries since 2011, but the EPI said progress seems to have “stalled of late”.

I know they are promising things they won't be able to or bother to deliver, because they are trying to appeal to Tory Party Members, who I guess are mostly elderly, retired, male, wealthy and xenophobic, but they seem to be trying to outdo each other in far right ideology. They are also unconsciously criticising their own government, when they talk about how broken Britain is, and how only they can mend it- like they don't know who has been in power the last decade.

Since we, the ordinary voter, have no say in who our next PM is, I do hope it is Liz. And I hope she makes John Redwood her Chancellor. Between them they will make the Tories unelectable for the next two parliaments.

I think levelling up should be stopped as businesses need to be able to locate their operations to the most suitable area of the UK for them. We shouldn`t artificially encourage it to go elsewhere, and of course doing so costs money.

The problem with the poorer North is because of the following:

1. Socialism - The extra taxes levied on businesses to fund it makes it harder to compete in price sensitive markets. In turn that makes them relocate in order to be able to compete. Its the major reason why most of our industry moved to China to take advantage of lower labour costs.

2. EU - We were designated at the country that would focus on banking and financial services. While that is great for people who are intelligent enough to get economic and finance degrees, sadly that isn`t most of the UK population.

Both of the above points combined resulted in a Britain where most people were stuck in low paid office, call centre, and warehousing jobs. Except for a small number of those living it up in London. Its not good for the majority of the UK including the North.

We need to cut the socialism, rebalance our economy so we have a decent industrial base, and then protect it with import tariffs in those sectors where we are capable of making everything we need.
