A family in New Zealand has been horrified to find human remains inside suitcases that had been left inside an abandoned storage locker.

The south Auckland family was understood to have discovered corpses inside suitcases after returning home with a trailer-load of items they had won in a storage unit auction.

Auctioning off the contents of abandoned storage units is a common practice if the owner of the items hasn't paid up.

According to NewsHub, the grim discovery is being treated as a homicide investigation.

Possible South Korea link to New Zealand ‘children in suitcase’ mystery

A woman believed to be a family member of the two children whose remains were found in suitcases in New Zealand is in South Korea, Seoul police say.

The woman, a Korean-born New Zealander, arrived in South Korea in 2018 and had no record of departure since then, a police officer told Reuters on Monday.

Her whereabouts and whether she had other relatives with her when she arrived in South Korea were not immediately known.

“New Zealand police had requested confirmation whether the person who might be related to a crime case was in South Korea,” the police officer said, adding that given her past address and age, she could be the children’s mother.

Police have identified the two children whose remains were discovered in suitcases bought from an Auckland storage facility.

New Zealand police issued a statement confirming they had identified the children on Friday, but a coroner’s order has suppressed the release of their names at the request of the family.

DI Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua said on Friday that police were “continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the children”.
