el midgetron Posted August 18, 2022 #1 Share Posted August 18, 2022 A "cannibal" eruption of solar material is due to make contact with Earth from Wednesday through Friday after a series of explosions on the sun's surface in recent days. The eruption of material, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), was launched from the sun in the early hours of August 15, less than a day after another one had been observed on August 14. CMEs are clouds of charged matter known as plasma that are ejected from the sun whenever a group of the sun's tangled magnetic field lines suddenly shift or realign, releasing huge amounts of energy. https://www.newsweek.com/space-weather-coronal-mass-ejection-cme-1734345 “In this case, NOAA forecasters expect G1 (minor) to G2-class (moderate) geomagnetic storms. “During such storms naked-eye auroras can descend into the USA as far south as New York and Idaho (geomagnetic latitude 55 degrees).” https://www.express.co.uk/news/science/1655848/solar-storm-warning-earth-radio-disruption-cannibal-cme-explosion-sun-flares-space-weather
the13bats Posted August 18, 2022 #2 Share Posted August 18, 2022 Interesting but it effects the entire world not just the USA perhaps science space would be a better section
+Shooter McGavin Posted September 2, 2022 #3 Share Posted September 2, 2022 (edited) Adding to this with today's article by Newsweek. Quote A giant sunspot may be about to erupt, sending out the most powerful form of solar flares growing for days. Sunspot AR3089, which is facing towards the Earth, has now developed a delta-class magnetic field, meaning that it has built up enough energy that it may release X-class solar flares. https://www.newsweek.com/sunspot-growing-release-x-class-solar-flare-towards-earth-1738900 Edited September 2, 2022 by Shooter McGavin
