Popular Post Eldorado Posted August 18, 2022 Popular Post #1 Share Posted August 18, 2022 Two former state judges who took bribes to send hundreds of children to prison have been ordered to pay more than $200million for the scheme. In the so-called kids-for-cash scandal, Pennsylvania state judges Mark Ciavarella, 72, and Michael Conahan, 70, shuttered a county-run juvenile detention center in exchange for $2.8million in illegal payments from the co-owner and builder of two for-profit jails. US District Judge Christopher Conner has awarded almost 300 plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the judges, with $106million in compensatory damages and $100million in punitive damages. The victims are ‘the tragic human casualties of a scandal of epic proportions’, Conner wrote in the judgment explanation on Tuesday. https://metro.co.uk/2022/08/18/pennsylvania-us-judges-took-millions-in-bribes-to-send-kids-to-prison-17202790/? Ciavarella ordered children as young as 8 to detention, many of them first-time offenders deemed delinquent for petty theft, jaywalking, truancy, smoking on school grounds and other minor infractions. The judge often ordered youths he had found delinquent to be immediately shackled, handcuffed and taken away without giving them a chance to put up a defense or even say goodbye to their families. https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/08/17/ex-judges-ordered-pay-200-million-kids-cash-scheme-victims/10350694002/ 1

Hawken Posted August 18, 2022 #5 Share Posted August 18, 2022 There's more corruption than meets the eye. If a politician is a multi-millionaire on their salary. You know they're getting dirty money.

Ciavarella is serving a 28 year prison sentence for this scandal and is 72 years old. That's a life sentence at his age and I'm sure he's getting a lot of unwanted attention unless they've (likely) got him under special protection. Conahan released in 2020 to home confinement due to the COVID pandemic and only had 6 years left on his sentence at the time. It's not enough for what they did to those kids and their futures. What those two guys did was evil. There's no telling what kind of emotional damage was done to those kids. 3

rashore Posted August 19, 2022 #14 Share Posted August 19, 2022 Folks, let's not make the topic a bickerment about political parties. Keep the discussion to the OP topic. 1

Many bar associations currently harbor criminals without any check on them. All you have to do is look at the Murdaugh case in South Carolina to get a sense of the phenomenon. The state bar sheltered multiple criminal attorneys in South Carolina, exactly as they did in PA. The number of bad apples we can find, is likely the tip of an iceberg. If we allow the corruption of our legal system to continue, unchecked, the dead will soon be piled up, like cordwood. Extreme greed extends across the entire bar association. Political affiliation is not a factor in this type of corruption. We see it in both major parties. Those making and administering the laws, must be subject to greater penalties when they violate the law, or the system will eventually fail.
