Eldorado Posted August 18, 2022 #1 Share Posted August 18, 2022 “I’m just going outside and may be some time,” said ‘Titus’ Oates as he heroically sacrificed himself on Scott’s doomed mission to the South Pole in 1912. History doesn’t record the next words spoken, but we’re pretty sure they weren’t: “It’s just that I want to try out my new extendable marshmallow-toasting fork.” Camping meant something rather different in those days, you see – and, arguably, something rather better. Oates, Baden-Powell and, um, Swampy would all be turning in their graves and/or sodden cotton sleeping bags to see the damage ‘glamping’ has done to the national backbone. Hell, even modern-day mockeries like Bear Grylls would think twice before deploying a multi-armed ’mallow prong. So here — just in case Oates should be discovered, defrosted, and want to know what the hell has happened to camping in the last century or so — are 31 reasons why he might not like the 21st-century version… https://www.msn.com/en-gb/travel/news/the-middle-class-have-ruined-camping-here-are-31-signs-you-re-part-of-the-problem/ar-AA10NpWR? 1 1 Top
darkmoonlady Posted August 19, 2022 #2 Share Posted August 19, 2022 It's not the middle class. Middle class are not financially faring well enough to afford expensive glamping. Income equality and expensive air travel have contributed more to people staying close to home, gas prices, Covid. Rv sales went through the roof year 2 of Covid and it got more people camping because the whole point is staying ten feet away from people with the added bonus of fresh air and not being at home. Add to it baby boomers rv snow birds, van lifers, Wild inspired Thru hikers...these days if you want a nice quiet piece of nature, you're better off in your backyard or local park. 1 Top

Yeah, a childhood buddy just beats cancer and covid hits he sells his house and his wife and mom take to an RV vagabond life traveling around "camping" times and things do change
Scholar4Truth Posted October 11, 2022 #4 Share Posted October 11, 2022 I went camping only one time in my life it was not a good experience, mostly cause of a massive thunderstorm that damaged our camping gear. We were only out there for a few hours and ended up returning home.
