Eldorado Posted August 19, 2022 #1 Share Posted August 19, 2022 Anna Parsons, the 21-year-old University of Otago student who fell nearly 40 feet rock climbing in the US' Yosemite National Park, had her foot amputated - and now she's been hit with a $1.2m hospital bill. The New Zealand native was climbing on Runout Slab at Snake Dike in the park when she slipped and rolled down a slope, breaking nearly every bone in her body. According to the NZ Herald, Parsons' sister, Jessica Ennor, said the fall caused her to have a punctured lung. Her left foot was significantly damaged to the point it had to be amputated. Last week, she also had major reconstructive surgery on her right foot. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/woman-hit-with-1-2m-bill-after-losing-foot-in-yosemite/ar-AA10O1C5?

No. 60% tax rates might be seen in places like the Netherlands but nowhere near that high in the UK

Same for anyone regardless of nationality. They do look closely at pre existing conditions but even then rarely charge, trauma though..... free, completely

bmk1245 Posted August 20, 2022 #13 Share Posted August 20, 2022 Wasn't she insured? Doing something extremely dangerous/quite often lethal without particular insurance is stupid. If you don't have money for insurance, maybe knitting is more suitable and safer endeavour...

Yeah, the US health system could pass as a dark comedy if it weren't real. It is the most monstrous fraud on the consumer, and it is all Richard Nixon's fault, because he didn't want "socialist medicine" i.e. a fair system based on giving all Americans access regardless of income. There is literally no reason why the US health system needs to be such a vicious and inhuman disaster, other than the greed of insurance companies and the US medical profession, and their powerful political lobbies. I know for a fact that there are MANY people in the medical profession AND the insurance business who KNOW AND HATE what their organizations are doing too, but change is hard fought for and harder won. As Winston Churchill famously said "You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing, after they have tried everything else". As an American looking at our health system, I have to say there are times even Churchill was right (I'm not a fan of his btw).
