No offense taken. You brought up the text of the Liberian constitution. The word used there is Negro. It was good of you to consider the possibility that that fact about one English-speaking country would cause offence in other English-speaking places. As it happens, that's not the "ennword" that many people would guess needed a euphemism. No blood, no foul.

It is interesting, as you say, that the now disused but in their time considered "polite" terms for African-Americans and mixed-race persons once prevalent in the United States are Romance-language terms, like Negro, Mulatto, Quadroon and Octoroon. I'm unsure that ignorance of the probable Spanish-Portugese origin of some of the cognates was much of a factor in their adoption, however. Educated Southerners are, as 4chan would say, educated.
