NASA Moon rocket ready for second attempt at liftoff

After technical issues halted its first launch attempt, NASA will try again on Saturday to get its new 30-story rocket off the ground and send its unmanned test capsule towards the Moon.

If the massive Space Launch System (SLS) lifts off successfully, it will not only be awe-inspiring but also historic for NASA, marking the first of its Artemis program plotting a return to the Moon, fifty years after the final Apollo mission.

The launch is scheduled for 2:17 pm local time (1817 GMT) from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with a possible two-hour delay if necessary.

The launch of Nasa's new Artemis I Moon rocket is facing a potentially lengthy delay after a second postponement.

Controllers tried and failed again on Saturday to get the Space Launch System (SLS) vehicle to lift off. They were thwarted by a fuel leak.

Engineers now want to inspect the rocket, and any repairs may need to happen in the workshop rather than on the launch pad.

The whole process is certain to lead to a setback of several weeks.

It means we may not see a third launch attempt before mid-October at the earliest.

Do they have build a second Artemis rocket or they are starting from scratch after the first launch ? It's starting to look like a long road for NASA... If they are building a second already, she will be ready before the first launch at this rate.

Yeah they are tring for sure, but are they building #2 already or they are waiting to fix the issue of Artemis 1 and launch before to sort out problems ?

You got it. Artemis 1 is an extremely serious test mission. Uncrewed and a bazillion special sensors.

This will completely blow your mind: every planet in our own solar system, side-by-side can fit between our earth and the moon, including Jupiter, Saturn, etc...

That's how far away our moon is.

This is a very serious flight-test mission.

NASA has called off the scheduled Tuesday launch of its historic uncrewed mission to the Moon due to a tropical storm that is forecast to strengthen as it approaches Florida.

After two previously canceled launch attempts, NASA is weighing returning the Artemis 1 mission rocket to its assembly site under the threat of extreme weather.

"NASA is forgoing a launch opportunity... and preparing for rollback (from the launchpad), while continuing to watch the weather forecast associated with Tropical Storm Ian," it said on Saturday.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Ian is due to "rapidly intensify" over the weekend as it moves toward Florida, home to the Kennedy Space Center, from which the rocket is set to launch.

You just never know about a Hurricane in the Gulf when the temperatures are so hot.  Some cooler air is set to move in but that isn't really going to thwart Hurricane Ian.  Better just to move it and plan ahead for another opportunity.

It's a joke anyway. Let's look at their track record for the past 50+ years. Cannot even get out of low earth orbit. The only way they get this done is to call Mr. Musk to do it for them. And they know it. Otherwise, it ain't happening.

It's about 200,000 miles. I can drive there given enough time. I mean if I had my flying car. Really, it not very far compared to other celestial objects, even in our own solar system.
