His decree would see 300,000 additional personnel called upon to support military efforts in Ukraine, the country’s defence minister has explained.

Sergei Shoigu said that students and those who served as conscripts would not be called up, and that the majority of Russia‘s millions-strong reserves would not be drafted.

In an address to the Russian people, Mr Putin also accused western leaders of engaging in “nuclear blackmail” against Moscow - and said he has “lots of weapons to reply”, prompting a British foreign office minister to urge calm.

And, Joe Biden is likely to rebuke his Russian counterpart in New York today at the UN general assembly, and underline how Moscow’s “naked aggression” is an affront to the core of what the global body stands for, the White House said.

Drafts are often unpopular. People don't like seeing their youngsters sacrificed unless they feel it's truly for a good cause. With any luck Russians will want to remove that psychopath from power.

Putin's decision to mobilise extra forces comes after his meeting with China and India, whatever he thought he might get from them does not look like it will happen.

He has obviously decided he's now on his own and reservist mobilisation is his only option. 

Reservists are those with military experience but retired, quite often they are not young men or women.

They are not as useful as so called elite troops or regulars. 

Bringing them into use doesn't look as bad as mobilising the general population, to the Russian public. 

But, if they hang around, they will be little more than bullet fodder.

Russian Navy Moving Kilo Attack Boats to Safety from Ukraine Strike Risk, Says U.K. MoD

Russia has “almost certainly” moved its Black Sea Fleet Kilo-class submarines from Sevastopol, Crimea, to the Novorossiysk port in Krasnodar Krai, the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense announced in a Tuesday intelligence report.

Russia could have up to four of the diesel-electric attack boats in the Black Sea.
All of the Kilo-class are capable of launching Kalibr NK cruise missiles. Sea-launched Kalibirs have been used in attacks on Ukraine, a senior military official said during a Monday briefing.

“Guaranteeing the Black Sea Fleet’s Crimea basing was likely one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s motivations for annexing the peninsula in 2014. Base security has now been directly undermined by Russia’s continual aggression in Ukraine.”

The most searched phrase in russia today is "how to break an arm". Because if you break your own arm, you're safe from deployment... until the arm heals, of course.

putler lost the war but he'll keeping sacrificing russians until there's no one left. Or until he's removed. 

His threats are nothing new. russia is chronically waffling about nukes and the latest threat is more an implication that russia won't use nukes first. 

All in all, almost nothing new, half of the creeping mobilization in russia is now official, putler's trolls and assets are still peddling the tired old stupidity according to which putin can blackmail the rest of the world and no one will dare resist because russian weapons are superior (  ), Ukraine is advancing nicely... the only new thing is intensity of russian exodus. They are desperately trying to flee mobilization. 

It's not Arab migrants that russia weaponised against EUrope anymore, it's russians fleeing putler's russia, but they can't be given refugee status or even let in the EU countries without visas, due to security reasons. It's highly likely that putler is sending saboteurs and actual murderers among those who are genuinely fleeing putler's madness.

But he's really not though. No one has invade the sovereign borders of Russia. The only thing that's happened is the historic failure of his invasion of Ukraine with his forces getting eliminated in the recent counter offensive.

Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, said on Sunday night that the US had “communicated directly, privately to the Russians at very high levels” how it would respond if Vladimir Putin carried out the nuclear strike threat he made during an address last week.  

“If Russia crosses this line, there will be catastrophic consequences for Russia. The United States will respond decisively,” Mr Sullivan told NBC’s Meet the Press programme. 

Mr Sullivan did not describe the nature of the planned response but said the US had privately “spelled out in greater detail exactly what that would mean” to Moscow.

No global nuclear war.

However, Russia's response could be problematic.
