Putin ‘passes secret law to send one million Russians to fight in Ukraine’

The new figure is likely to exacerbate fears of conscription among ordinary Russians - a fear that has already sparked mass protests and queues to leave the country since the plan was announced on Wednesday.

It comes as some protesters detained at the anti-war rallies were threatened with deployment to the frontlines and reports that men with no military experience were being called up, despite the Kremlin's assurances that wouldn't happen. Stories emerged from one remote region of university students being pulled straight out of class.

According to Novaya Gazeta, an exiled independent newspaper, citing an anonymous Kremlin source, the redacted Section 7 of Putin's decree states that up to one million men could be mobilised.

The unnamed Kremlin official said the number had been revised several times and that the Russian military insisted on it being classified.

That might not be to hide it from Russians but from NATO.

If they turn up with a 10 million man army they are walking all the way to Berlin.

If it is a secret, how does anyone know about it.  The headline is idiotic click bait.

The info comes from an unnamed official in Moscow and reported by an exiled Russian newspaper.

The true number is unknown but we can speculate that it's higher than the official 300.000 troops.

In any case it's clear now that we cannot defeat Russia in Ukraine.

Which we are you talking about when you say "we cannot defeat Russia in Ukraine."?   I suspect that conscripted people who have been protesting the action against the Ukraine will find a way to help them rather than fight them.  It is most likely some weird propoganda, not reality.   It it is real, then Putin has fallen completely into insanity if he thinks he can conscript protesters to fight in a war they are protesting.   Big disaster looming for his regular troops.

God I hope so. If they muster a force that big, they may be poorly trained and p***ed off but that's still a massive force. Hope this backfires kn putler.

Thousands of poorly trained troops will be a hinderance to any properly trained troops. They will be a liability, betraying positions, sapping morale, and very quickly casualties that need caring for.

Unless Putin is content for the very long haul, a senseless continual war that will justify his public domestic pronouncements that Russia is surrounded by enemies.

Until he has no more young people to send to war or he has some kind of health event that takes him out.

Its a boon to those poor young people who can't afford a plane ticket or get a reservation.

They will walk to the west, leave their units and find Ukrainians to surrender to before their food runs out or they freeze to death.

Maybe we could short circuit this by taking a vote in Russia.  Who wants to join the West and NATO?

"The target, revealed by a Kremlin source to a Russian newspaper,"  uh huh.

Moving large numbers into convoys only to sit and be targeted did not work before and is why Russia is where it is now.

More of the same but bigger will not be any more effective.

Just more sitting in bottlenecks, needing food and fuel, and a sitting duck for new missiles and drones.

And there is the problem of moving troops to the Russian Ukraine border.

Saying its a training exercise is not an option this time around.

They can be picked off as they cross.

If Russia are rounding up 1 million men from towns and cities using their police, then the war is over.

They will no doubt send a 100,000 with poor training to help hold the Ukrainian front while they put the other 900,000 through training. And once the trained hit Ukraine it has lost.

If we are wrong and the secret clause says more, like 5 million, they are going for more than just Ukraine.

A Russian draft officer has been shot by a man angry at his friend’s conscription and another man has set himself on fire in a protest as opposition to Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a partial mobilisation for the war in Ukraine grows.

Protests were also expected to continue for a third day in Russia’s Dagestan region, where officers have fired automatic weapons in the air to disperse angry crowds. Meanwhile, thousands of cars have lined up at the Russian borders carrying young men seeking to flee the country in order to escape the draft.

There is a sense that tensions are rising across Russia, as angry showdowns at local draft centres play out in videos published to social media and rumours fly about an impending closure of the borders or even martial law.

As it should be strife raises it’s head on the home base. Hopefully there will be a significant increase in rebellion by Russian civilians
