el midgetron Posted September 24, 2022 #1 Share Posted September 24, 2022 A California high school with a “Social Justice Academy” is suffering in more traditional subjects like math, where students are getting dismal scores. San Leandro High School’s Social Justice Academy is a three-year “rigorous” and “career-themed” program for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, according to the academy’s website. It is one of three academy programs offered at the high school, and students must apply for admission. The academy’s “specially designed curriculum” focuses on critical pedagogy, social justice, ethnic studies, gender studies, intersectionality, and social and emotional skill development among other things. The curriculum teaches students to “challenge and criticize power, oppression, capitalism, white supremacy, imperialism, colonialism, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, cisheteropatriarchy, ableism, and xenophobia on the internal, interpersonal, institutional, and ideological levels.” Meanwhile, some core curriculum academics are suffering at the high school. San Leandro High School has a 19% math proficiency rate and 21% science proficiency rate, well below California’s average of 30% proficiency in both math and science, according to U.S. News and World Report. The school’s reading proficiency rate is 57%, also below the state average. https://www.dailywire.com/news/california-school-with-social-justice-academy-has-19-math-proficiency 1 2

Tatetopa Posted September 25, 2022 #12 Share Posted September 25, 2022 Look on the bright side, all of those kids in Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, West Virginia and Kentucky won't feel like the bottom of the barrel any more. And now those states can sit back and figure they don't need to spend any more on education. Plus the Republicans will gain more supporters that can't check their statements. A great day for conservatives, enjoy it. 1

spartan max2 Posted September 25, 2022 #19 Share Posted September 25, 2022 I think a social justice specific class is dumb. I do also think the cause and effect assumption people are making about the school is dumb too. The class isn't why the school is failing. We have many failing schools all across the nation unfortunately.

You are so right. But when things look dismal, it is distracting to talk about how misguided and stupid somebody else is. It doesn't help anything, it doesn't change anything, it doesn't improve anything. It has become a national pastime. That is the purpose of this entire thread, as many others, to feel less bad about ones own condition, not by improving it but by thinking someone else is worse off.

Tatetopa Posted September 25, 2022 #23 Share Posted September 25, 2022 How about a real discussion on what to do about declining math and science scores in America. Are we going to do anything at all but grouse? How many governors D or R have made education an important priority in their state? How many parents show up to school board meetings to demand better funding and improved teaching of science and math? How many high schools are like mine was where some teachers use standardized multiple choice tests and the answer key provided because they know so little about their subject. Do parents get involved with dull stuff like plane geometry and reading skills or save their activism for CRT and wokeism? Did we stop having classes on math and science and replace them with social studies, but not teach civics, American history and basics of how our own government functions? Kids in any state are as smart as kids in Finland, but the outcomes are better in Finland because they do have education as a priority. Our kids are smart but they are ignorant because we are complacent to keep them that way. Any idea how we will attract back high tech industry to any state where kids can't read manufacturing instructions or do simple work related math?
