U.S. farmers urge Washington to challenge Mexico's looming ban on GM corn

Farmers in the United States are urging their government to challenge a looming Mexican ban on genetically modified (GM) corn under a regional free trade agreement, warning of billions of dollars of economic damage to both countries.

A late 2020 decree by Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador would phase out GM corn and the herbicide glyphosate by 2024. Supporters of the ban say GM seeds can contaminate Mexico's age-old native varieties and point to research showing adverse effects of glyphosate.

Mexico prides itself as the birthplace of modern corn but it imports about 17 million tonnes of U.S. corn a year and is on track to import even more this year, experts said.

Looks like it is going to hurt the U.S. eccononically more than Mexico.   I think Mexico has a right to try to preserve their crops.   Monsanto is probably behind the protest, and they need to go the way of the dinosaur because that's what will happen to us if they are allowed to ruin the world like they have ruined the U.S.

The funny thing about contaminating local crops.  This may come as a surprise <sarcasm> but Iowa is a big corn producing state.  We had farmers sued by Monsanto and the like because they had GMO corn in their fields due to cross pollination. Monsanto Sues Farmers for 16 Yrs over GMOs, NEVER Loses (naturalsociety.com)

So not only would Mexico potentially lose their local strains, but Monsanto could sue them for it.

They did the same thing to the soybean farmers who would not buy their seed as well.   It was all about controling the seeds.  I would like to see Monsanto sue a whole country, show them for the reprobates they are.  That would be ridiculous.   The wouldn't get away with it in Europe where there are very strict rules about GMO seeds.

Where's Bill Gates on this? Isn't he busy buying up all of the arable land left vacant from bankrupt farmers?

It happens allot.  Farmers cannot even use their own seeds because they will get sued.  Most every seed has at least a little cross pollination in it and Monsanto claims that it is theirs.
