You and I were not enslaved so, *we* will be paid nothing. Ya think libs will ever learn that? 2] Probably because the US made the promise: This is not my battle. Forty acres and a mule is part of Special Field Orders No. 15, a wartime order proclaimed by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman on January 16, 1865, during the American Civil War, to allot land to some freed families, in plots of land no larger than 40 acres (16 ha). Sherman later ordered the army to lend mules for the agrarian reform effort.
Eldorado Posted May 11, 2023 #52 Share Posted May 11, 2023 California governor Gavin Newsom has refused to endorse plans to pay slave descendants up to $1.2 million (£950,000) each. Mr Newsom, a Democrat who is rumoured to have White House ambitions, indicated he would not support cash payments proposed by the task force he set up following the murder of George Floyd. Dealing with the legacy of slavery was “about much more than cash payments” he told Fox News. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/other/governor-rejects-1-2m-reparation-pay-out-for-black-californians/ar-AA1b0XGM?

Bankrupt the state for people who were never slaves? Slavery ended 150 years ago. How many European descent citizens had family in the US at that time? Why should they have to pay for something neither them nor their ancestors had anything to do with? They like to spout POC, yet, the Asians are not white and their taxes would be paying for this? Just ridiculous My family lost a farm in what is now Watertown, Massachusetts. It was seized by the Commonwealth during the Revolution. Under the Treaty of Ghent it was supposed to be returned to us, but it never was. Same thing applies to US military reservations in Kentucky. In Ohio, a railroad took a right-of-way across another of my family's farms. They agreed to return the land to the families or the heirs when they were done with it, but when the railroad went bankrupt, the State of Ohio thought a walking trail along the old right-of-way would be just the thing and seized the land in violation of the agreement. There are about 4800 British, French, Russian, Spanish, Mexican, Iowa Tribe and House of Burgesses land grants in the US. There are even the Moravian tracts in Ohio which the US govt took, gave back to the Indians and then took back again. There's all that reservation land taken under the Dawes Act. Practically everybody owes reparations to everybody else. Doug Edited May 11, 2023 by Doug1066

To force modern people who had no benefit or personal responsibility for slavery, to pay money to OTHER modern Americans who were never enslaved, does nothing but tear the country down even further. It will engender anger, even hate, and will cause racism to grow. Not to mention to just choose one group of people as if they were the only ones enslaved is idiotic. If I were a descendent of a chinese or Irish or native slave I would be screaming about this. And the Japanese Americans who were in internment camps during WW2 got a tiny amount for reparations, a lot of them loosing family businesses and homes and family members who died because of lack of medical care that those reparations could not compensate for. It is the big melting pot and anyone in the U.S. who has european ancestors probablly will find they also have ancestors from other parts of the world depending on how recent their ancestors immigrated to the U.S. And not to mention, my african and japanese ancestors were from before colonization or immigration to the U.S.

Tatetopa Posted May 12, 2023 #62 Share Posted May 12, 2023 Ancestors, we all have them. They are gone now. Go back far enough and all of our ancestors are shadows sitting around a campfire. The world is ours now, our behavior is what matters. Maybe I wouldn't do what some of my ancestors did, and maybe they wouldn't be proud of me either. What is important now is how we set the stage for our descendants. If there is something we did, we should make it good. Our responsibility is to ourselves and the next generation, not the past. We will soon become ancestors and our children will inherit what all of us including our own ancestors have left them. All we can do is give them our best effort.

Ultimately they'd end up paying like $200,000 to each, and show a big fix to the state budget, if only on paper. Isn't government wonderful?? The Federal govt is probably the only entity on earth that can spend itself rich. But it has to do it in the right way. The money has to go to people who will buy manufactured products like beans and cars and houses and other things that will put people to work making them. The taxes on those incomes will drastically reduce the cost. It does not work to give the money to corporations that will use it to buy stocks or "invest" it in things that only put one secretary to work. I don't blame Rubs for wanting to balance the budget. They know that the people who get most of it do not contribute much to the economy. Trickle down does not work. Don't trickle down on me! Hi Die Up here have seen people handed sums of money from $60-150k and it got spent on cars that they crashed after spending the rest on booze and drugs. Better off to just give them a lot to build a house on that is conditional like they have to live in it for X number of years before they can sell it. Ultimately the money they get goes back to the system one way or the other it would be nice if they put it to productive personal growth. The reality is that for most it won’t.
