[Solved] 'Format SD Card' problemo.

Hello, good people of UM,

I was using an SD Card as portable storage in my old(ish) phone.

Now, I can't format it on my ******* Windows 10 laptop.

I have had this problem before, but I can't remember how I got around it.

Any ideas?

Are you logged into Windows as an admin? You can see if you are by clicking "Start", "Settings" (gear symbol) and "Accounts". If you are not set as admin, edit it so that you are.

I am the only user and Administrator.

I don't have any problems, apart from this.  I can format anything, except for an SD Card formatted as portable phone storage.

I figured out how to do it last time, but I can't remember how!

No.

I go onto "My PC", right-click on the D:drive, start the formatting, but it does nothing, and the green "progress" bar never appears.

Sounds like broken hardware or corrupt software. But you said you fixed it previously?

I can usually format anything I want to, but I remember having this thing happen before.

It's only a problem with an SD card taken out of a phone.

Hum, did you try going thru disk management and formatting it there?

Put it back in the phone and delete everything. You'll lose the data anyway when it formats on the computer, or

1. Insert the SD card into your computer.
2. Open File Explorer and locate the drive letter for your SD card. Right-click the drive and select Format .
3. If the Capacity of your SD card is less than 64 GB, set the File System to FAT32. ...
4. Select OK to ignore the warning that the data on the drive will be erased and begin formatting the card.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but often as phones update they stop supporting older SD cards.  You may need to buy a newer replacement, or a new phone.  At least that is what happened to me when I ran into this issue.

As soon as I read this ^ I said "That's it!"

I can't think why it will only format via Disk Management, but it does, and it has!
