A former member of the European Parliament is among four people who have been arrested in an investigation into suspected bribery by a Gulf state.

Prosecutors suspect the country tried to influence parliament decisions with donations of money or gifts.

Cash worth about €600,000 ($632,000; £515,000) was seized by Belgian police in searches of 16 Brussels locations.

Police have not named the country in question, but unconfirmed local media reports have suggested it was Qatar.

It is accused of targeting aides at the parliament.

European Parliament VP taken into custody

"This is not an isolated incident," said Transparency International. "For several decades, [the European] Parliament has allowed a culture of impunity to develop ... and a total absence of independent ethical control".

Gulf lobbying at EU Parliament

Authorities believe the Gulf country Qatar tried to sway the European Parliament by "paying large sums of money or offering large gifts to third parties with a significant political and/or strategic position within the European Parliament."

Investigators raided 16 addresses in Brussels as part of the investigation.

They recovered around €600,000 ($633,500) in cash and seized computer equipment and mobile phones.

EU corruption charges 'very serious', says Von der Leyen.

Ms von der Leyen called for the creation of a new EU ethics body. :innocent:

Ms von der Leyen said confidence in European institutions required the highest ethical standards.

"The allegations against the vice-president of the European Parliament are of utmost concern, very serious," she said.

This follows complaints against von der Leyen over her refusal to give information on covid vaccine contracts she negotiated.

EU stonewalls over von der Leyen’s role in multibillion-euro Pfizer vaccine deal

European Court of Auditors accuses Commission of refusing to release details of how the bloc’s biggest vaccine contract was negotiated.

The budget watchdog found that the EU chief threw out the existing rulebook to hash out a preliminary deal with the U.S. multinational, paving the way for a contract for up to 1.8 billion coronavirus vaccine doses to be signed in May 2021. For all the other vaccine deals struck by the EU between 2020 and 2021, a joint team comprising officials from the Commission and seven member countries conducted exploratory talks. The outcome was then taken to a Vaccine Steering Board made up of representatives from all 27 EU member states who signed off on it.

But this established procedure was not followed in the case of the EU’s biggest contract, the Court of Auditors says. Instead, von der Leyen herself conducted preliminary negotiations for the contract in March, and presented the results to the steering board in April. Meanwhile, a planned meeting of scientific advisers, organized to discuss the EU’s vaccine strategy for 2022, never took place, the court writes

An influential member of the non-governmental organisation at the heart of the Qatargate scandal in the European Parliament is a convicted terrorist.

Sergio Segio, 67, a “commander” of Italian far-Left militants Prima Linea, murdered two Milanese judges during the group’s armed struggle against the establishment.

Nicknamed Commandante Sirio, he also helped carry out a deadly bomb attack on a prison in a bid to free his then girlfriend, killing a prison officer and a passerby.

He was arrested in 1983 and sentenced to life imprisonment for his roles in the terror attacks.

In jail, Segio renounced violence, and became a writer and campaigner on prison conditions, human rights and drug addiction.

Police seizures of suitcases stuffed full of cash are usually the result of crackdowns on crime gangs or drug lords. This time, though, the brick-like wads of €50 notes were found not by the vice squad, but by detectives investigating allegations of corruption in the European Parliament.

Brussels has been gripped this week by stories of an international bribery ring said to involve Qatar, Morocco and influential EU figures. Colossal sums of money have been found in the homes of some of the alleged recipients: €600,000 in bank notes at the home of an Italian politician, €150,000 tucked into the luxury luggage of a Greek socialist MEP, and hundreds of thousands more in the possession of her father.

In all, more than €1.5 million (£1.3m) has been seized in raids on 19 locations in the Belgian capital and in Italy, some of which were in the Parliament itself.
