ANOTHER tragedy in the Channel

Three people have died after a migrant boat got into serious difficulties in the freezing Channel in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency calls reporting the vessel was in distress were received by the UK coastguard shortly before 3am.

It is the first known major rescue operation launched in the Channel since at least 27 migrants are known to have perished after their dinghy began to take on water in November 2021.

Traffickers deserve life in prison, IMO.  They are amongst the lowest of the low.

"replenish"

The thing is, the UK like most countries in Europe, is desperately short of workers for lower paid jobs in factories, driving lorries, and in agriculture and fishing. We have increased our immigration since leaving the EU (around about a million have taken residency since beginning 2020) but they are not all the right sort to help our underlying economy- they tend to be white collar medical, IT, clerical workers, etc.

I don't know what things are like in the US, but Europe has been facing a demographic timebomb for years- too many older people not working and requiring healthcare and pensions, and not enough young people. China has already reached crisis point over this, which is why they have abandoned the one child policy.

We should be thinking outside the box and getting these asylum seekers into the jobs the Brits won't or can't do- if they are really fleeing terror, they should presumably be easily persuaded to work in care homes or on farms.

Twelve children were among the 39 people rescued from a migrant boat which began sinking in the English Channel on Wednesday, it has emerged.

A Kent County Council meeting heard a teenager was among four people who died in the incident, while searches continue for four people still missing.

They were on a packed vessel which started sinking in freezing waters between Kent and France.

Crews on a nearby fishing boat and lifeboats helped with the rescue.

A search operation for the four people still missing is being carried out by drone.

The children who were rescued have been taken into care by Kent County Council.

The obvious answer to saving lives is to stop the crossings.
