More than a million immigrants will arrive each year as Britain copes with domestic labour demands and global changes, a report has said.

The study by the Social Market Foundation said an ageing population and skills shortages meant the country had a continuing demand for workers.

Britain had longstanding ties with crowded countries whose demographic changes meant they had many young people looking elsewhere for jobs and opportunities, the report added.

An estimated 1.1 million people came to the UK to live, work or study in the year to June, while 560,000 people emigrated, leaving net immigration at a record 504,000.
