Late Saturday night a gunman described as an Asian male opened fire in a dance hall during a celebration of the Lunar New Year in Monterey Park. About 20 minutes later, an Asian male went into a dance hall in Alhambra with a firearm that patrons were able to take away from him. The suspect fled in a white cargo van. There were 10 killed and 10 injured, 5 of whom are critical. Law enforcement surrounded a white cargo van with a male barricaded inside in Torrence, about 27 miles from Monterey Park.

Law enforcement surrounded a white cargo van in Torrance, 27 miles away from Monterey Park, with a person barricaded inside, Luna said.

"People have asked, 'Is that your suspect?'" Luna told reporters. "We don't know."

Luna said at a briefing that he believed the Alhambra was connected to the Monterey Park shooting but investigators were still looking at all possibilities.

The shooting came after thousands of people had gathered for a Lunar New Year Festival in Monterey Park, a small city of about 60,000, about two-thirds of them Asian American. It is about 10 miles east of Los Angeles.

Monterey Park's neighboring community, Alhambra, is more than 50% Asian American.

The suspect may have shot himself after police surrounded the van.

The suspected gunman who allegedly shot 20 people, 10 fatally, at a dance studio near a Lunar New Year celebration in the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park is possibly connected to a van law enforcement officers surrounded Sunday and forced their way into about 30 miles from where the massacre occurred, authorities said.

SWAT officers broke the driver's side window of the van around 1 p.m. local time, about two hours after police made a traffic stop in the Los Angeles County city of Torrance and heard a loud noise coming from inside the vehicle, sources told ABC News.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, is believed to have been inside a white cargo van, police officials told ABC station KABC. Live aerial footage showed the van sandwiched between two police armored vehicles, Torrance police officials told KABC.

Law enforcement officials told ABC News that when tactical teams accessed the van, they found a dead man believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They are currently working to determine a positive ID and whether or not he was the man being sought in connection with last night's mass shooting, the officials said.

The shooter and some of the victims have been identified. The victims ranged in age from 50-70 yrs old.

Witnesses say about 50 people were inside the dance studio when the gunman opened fire Saturday night. Five women and five men are among the deceased victims, whose ages ranged from 50 to 70 years old, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner.

The coroner so far has identified two of the female victims as My Nhan and Lilan Li. Both of them were in their 60s.

The rest have not been officially identified by authorities yet, but friends identified one of the people killed as dance instructor Ming Wei Ma. He was known for his patience and understanding.

Meanwhile, seven of the 10 wounded people remained in the hospital Sunday night, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said.

The sheriff said the department usually doesn't disclose the names of hospitals where victims of violent crimes are being treated. But in this case, he said, a disturbing incident reinforces the decision to keep that information private.

"Somebody called one of those hospitals to say something along the lines of they want to go and finish the job," Luna said. "That is absolutely horrible."

A 26 yr old man was able to disarm the gunman at the second ballroom he attacked.

The gunman was 72 yrs old and may have been targeting someone in his family who he accused of poisoning him. ABC World News Tonight just said he may have been his ex-wife.

The suspect in a dance hall shooting rampage in Monterey Park, California on Saturday night went to a police station weeks before to report decades-old past poisoning allegations involving his family, police said Monday.

Huu Can Tran, 72, walked into a Hemet police station Jan. 7 and 9, “alleging past fraud, theft, and poisoning allegations involving his family in the Los Angeles area 10 to 20 years ago,” the Hemet Police Department revealed.

Tran, who had a residence in Hemet, said he would return to the station with documentation of his claims, but he never went back, the department said. The department did not reveal further details about the gunman’s visit to the station.

Speaking with NBC News, Monterey Park Mayor Henry Lo said the motive might have involved a personal relationship somehow connected to the dance hall. Lo said there appeared to be a "history of domestic violence," but did not provide more details.

"We do understand that he may have had a history of visiting this dance hall and perhaps the motivation has to do with some personal relationships, but that’s something that I think investigators are still uncovering and investigating and we’ll probably find out more in the hours ahead or even days ahead," Lo said.

And now another one in Iowa.

Excuse me - only three shot - it's not a "mass" killing.

That doesn't make it any less terrible. ABC News also just said 3 suspects are in custody. The 2 students died but the staff member is in the hospital.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/shooting-at-des-moines-charter-school-kills-2-students/ar-AA16Fehb

Officers found three people shot, including two students in critical condition. The officers began performing CPR until medics arrived on the scene. The students were taken to a nearby hospital, where they died.

The third victim, an employee at the school, is in serious condition and was going into surgery Monday afternoon.

Paul Parizek, public information officer with the Des Moines Police Department, told the press three suspects were taken into custody about 20 minutes after the initial call.

Patrol officers identified a vehicle described by witnesses in traffic. One of the suspects fled when the vehicle was pulled over. A K-9 unit tracked them down near MacRae Park.

Parizek said there are no other suspects at this time. Though a motive is not known, he said this was a targeted shooting.
