Apparently it occurred just a couple of hours ago.  Hopefully, the loss of life won't be catastrophic but 7.8 is extremely unusual in that region.

DIYARBAKIR/ANKARA, Turkey, Feb 6 (Reuters) - A major earthquake of magnitude 7.9 struck central Turkey and northwest Syria on Monday, killing hundreds of people as buildings collapsed across the snowy region, triggering a search for survivors trapped in rubble.

The quake, which hit in the early darkness of a winter morning, was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon.

I pray the death toll doesn't reach a catastrophic level.  Hopefully our country will get aid on the way to them, ASAP.

CNN is reporting over 300 dead now and 2,000 injured. This is just horrific. It was one of the hardest earthquakes to hit the area in over 100 years.

The BBC is also saying now that the death toll has reached over 300.

Seeing many videos of buildings collapsing there but I'm going to wait before posting them as to make sure they're actual videos from this earthquake. I've seen people commenting footage from the past being passed on as today's earthquake. Best to wait for a bit until these videos can be confirmed.

Hopefully this quake curtails Turkey supplying arms to Russia for a while. My sympathies to the good people who were killed, or displaced.

If this is really the result of raised geological activity due to that core reversal thing that happened then this makes me worried about other regions that have had very strong earthquakes in the past but not much since then, like Northern Italy or Lisbon..

Those places aren't prepared like , for example, a lot of Japan or California is.

Second earthquake hits after more than 1,900 killed in Turkey and Syria

A rescue operation is under way across much of southern Turkey and northern Syria following a huge earthquake that has killed more than 1,900 people

The 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Gaziantep in the early hours of Monday while people were asleep

A new 7.5-magnitude tremor hit at around 13:30 local time (10:30 GMT), which officials said was "not an aftershock"

The country's disaster agency says more than 1,100 people were killed in Turkey alone after the first quake, and more than 5,300 were wounded

Syrian authorities are reporting 783 dead and more than 2,000 injured, according to the AFP news agency

Rescuers are racing to save people trapped beneath the rubble after hundreds of buildings collapsed in both countries

This individual predicted this earthquake 2 days ago :o

Yes, he predicted the locattion and magnitud. And now the scientists attack him, saying it's not possible to predicted earthquakes, even if he did predicted the locattion and magnitud of the earthquake. The problem is that Frank Hoogerbeets will say he knew this because he was looking at the planets. And that immediately makes the scientist avoid him, instead of trying to find the real reason for his accurate prediction.

My guess is that Frank himself have become high sensitive to upcoming earthquakes, due to his strong beliefs. He could feel this 48 hours before it happened. The scientists should try to check out how and why, instead of saying it was a lucky guess.

Even the blue lights in the sky, that the scientists refused to believe existed, appeared tonight in Turkey.

Death toll was up to 2700 and counting this morning.  Turkey has asked NATO and allies for assistance in rescue and dealing with the aftermath.

I thought it was possible to predict the location and intensity of earthquakes to some accuracy, just not the time they will hit?

Someone should yell Raptor Witness... THIS is a prediction:

The guy is guessing, obviously, but can you imagine the response if he nailed it?  That kind of quake would raze most man-made structures in that region.
