Tony Blair and William Hague call for digital ID cards for all

This is how it starts....

Sir Tony Blair and Lord Hague have called for everyone in the UK to get digital ID cards as part of a "technological revolution".

In a report, the former Labour prime minister and Conservative leader argue that government records "are still based in a different era".

The idea of introducing ID cards has been controversial.

As PM, Sir Tony tried to introduce an ID card scheme but it was scrapped by the coalition government.

Opponents of identity cards have raised concerns about civil liberties and what they see as unnecessary data collection and intrusion by the state.

And this is where it's heading......

"Nigeria blocks 73 million mobile phones in security clampdown"

Nigeria has been rolling out 11-digit electronic national identity cards for almost a decade, which record an individual’s personal and biometric data, including fingerprints and photo.

The National Identity Number (NIN) is required to open a bank account, apply for a driver’s license, vote, get health insurance, and file tax returns.

Nigeria is among dozens of African countries including Ghana, Egypt and Kenya with SIM registration laws that authorities say are necessary for security purposes, but digital rights experts here say increase surveillance and hurts privacy.

Be afraid, be very afraid. This is anslide into control. No mortgage without I.d., no job, no entry to leisure facilities, no vote... oh we can do location tracking. Why were you at the home of a political party member. Why were you shipping at this takeaway with links abroad... oh we can link your medical records. Why were you down the pub today... oh you need protection and we the government know best. Very, very dangerous.

The next step is charging you to travel and taking the money directly out of your bank account under the guise of saving the planet.

It is a good example of a solution looking for a problem.

It would also cost a fortune to operate and chances are the data collected would, after a suitable period, be sold.

Oh I think the WEF are more than happy to help fund it.

Eventually everyone except for the extremely poor will have a digital (Global) ID card. Conspiracy theories aside it is just where the technology is headed.

Cradle to Grave coverage humans. LOL :alien:

Tony Blair is not prime minister anymore. Tory boy William Hague is a peer from the unelected House of Lords. Both are undemocratic and shouldn't be allowed to make decisions like that on everyone else.

In truth I doubt the idea will go anywhere, just as previous attempts at ID cards died a death.

The UK can be relaxed about many gov policy's that others find offensive, we are not the French.

But there is a limit to what the UK public will put up with and this has been one example.

There is also the thought, in the back of peoples minds, that if implemented what if you are stopped without an ID.

Are you thrown in a cell ? Would they become mandatory.

As Blair and Hague are both EU fans maybe they are trying to fix a problem they helped to cause due to supporting the free movement of people.   ;)
