Still Waters Posted March 2 #1 Share Posted March 2 (IP: Staff) · The security service MI5 missed a significant chance to take action that might have prevented the Manchester Arena attack, an inquiry has found. Chairman Sir John Saunders said the reasons for the missed opportunity included a "failure" by an MI5 officer to act swiftly enough. Twenty-two people were killed when Salman Abedi detonated a homemade bomb after a concert on 22 May 2017. The public inquiry found Abedi was probably assisted by someone in Libya. It is the first time an official conclusion has been made about the possible involvement of other people from abroad. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-64815723 This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly. itsnotoutthere Posted March 3 #3 Share Posted March 3 (edited) Manchester Arena bomber ‘radicalised by family’s extremist views’ The family of the Manchester Arena bomber held “significant responsibility” for his radicalisation and he likely learnt to build his deadly device in Libya, an inquiry has concluded. Salman Abedi, who carried out his suicide attack at the age of 22, came from a Libyan family who moved to the UK in 1993 and sought asylum on the basis they faced persecution under the regime of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. Both Ramadan, his father, and Samia Tabbal, his mother, “held extremist Islamic views” which helped shape the mindsets of both Salman and Hashem, his younger brother who was jailed in 2020 for his role in the attack, the Manchester Arena inquiry found. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/manchester-arena-bomber-radicalised-by-family-s-extremist-views/ar-AA188Eyo?ocid=BingHp01&cvid=1a2d90a2963b4f6cbbae2e60e646dae8&ei=10 So perhaps the civil servants that approved their asylum application bare some of the blame then. Still Waters Posted March 5 Author #4 Share Posted March 5 (IP: Staff) · The father of the youngest victim of the Manchester Arena bombing has said he will sue MI5 as it holds "most of the blame" for the attack. The security service's Director General, Ken McCallum, publicly apologised after a public inquiry into the May 2017 atrocity found it might have been prevented if MI5 had acted on intelligence about bomber Salman Abedi. Now, Andrew Roussos, the father of eight-year-old Saffie-Rose Roussos from Leyland and the youngest of the 22 people killed following the Arianna Grande concert, said he has instructed solicitors to look into suing the security service. It is believed a number of other families have also indicated they could join him in legal action, the Sunday Time has reported. Mr Roussos’ solicitors, Broudie Jackson Canter, are looking at a possible High Court claim which would rest upon Article 2 of the Human Rights Act, which protects the right to life. https://www.itv.com/news/granada/2023-03-05/father-of-youngest-manchester-arena-victim-to-sue-mi5-for-failures 1 Top

Quote Speaking on Times Radio, Mr Roussos said: “It’s the only way to learn, everybody learns by hitting them hard in the pocket, I am sorry to say. So because one terror attack, among dozens of plots, slipped through, you want to hit them in the pocket so they have less money to stop the next one? Quote “So yes MI5 have, for me, most of the blame.” I would think Abedi and his co-conspirators hold more blame than the people working hard to stop him. Quote “It’s alright saying that Manchester wasn’t prepared that night, which it wasn’t, and the arena was so not prepared for such an attack, for me knowing the information we knew at the start, Salman Abedi should not have made it to that arena that night, there were too many missed opportunities.” As I always say when these things happen, I wish we could see what the their employees have to deal with and balance day to day. And that they'd announce how many successful investigations they have for each that ends like this. 2 Top

Agree, there should be a better procedure vetting immigrants. However, as with all extremist views, they start with either the parents or nowdays with social media. We can see that among immigrants just as well as with domestic non immigrants. The views of the old guard is forced upon the children regardless of what faith, social view or political agenda. As for the MI5 and other security agencies, it is a uphill battle. They are being blamed when a foreign extremist succeeds with an attack but when it comes to domestic extremists the agencies are being blamed for overreach. If we want our nations safe we have to stand behind our security agencies no matter what or who is the potential attacker.
Still Waters Posted March 11 Author #8 Share Posted March 11 (IP: Staff) · Related: Quote A former suspect in the Manchester Arena bombing had his British citizenship revoked and then returned after MI5 changed its view of his role in the attack, the BBC can reveal. Mohammed Soliman, 26, was arrested in Libya after being stripped of his citizenship over suspicions he helped prepare the May 2017 attack. He appealed the decision and said he was mistreated while detained in Libya. But the government avoided a court case by returning his citizenship in 2021. He has always said he did not knowingly help the bombers. The Home Office declined to answer specific questions about the case, but said the UK has one of the world's most robust counter-terror systems. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64890833
