He also made the strange statement that he thinks it might be humans from the future, which seems more likely to him than aliens that have figured out FTL.

Personally I'd say both are equally difficult to achieve.

Yup, but can't officially admit that though.  People would go crazy :-) 

More based on the fact that we still have no idea how to do both so hard to say why one would be harder than the other.
