Sadiq Khan plotting ‘pay-as-you-drive’ scheme using Ulez cameras

Sadiq Khan is planning to use traffic cameras that enforce the ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) in London to help run a future “pay-as-you drive” scheme, according to reports.

Around 200,000 more vehicles will be hit with the £12.50 daily charge in August when ULEZ expands across Greater London, beyond the M25, reaching parts of the Home Counties.

In revolt, several councils surrounding the capital have refused to sign an agreement allowing Transport for London (TfL) - of which Mr Khan is chairman - to install street signs and cameras warning drivers they are approaching the clean air zone.

Answering a question from the London Assembly, he said: "ANPR (automatic numberplate recognition) cameras could form part of the potential operation of such a scheme but no proposals have been developed."

Mr Khan has previously hinted that he is looking to adopt a system similar to Singapore, where sensors on gantries monitor cars’ movements and charge more for travelling at peak times.

Governments exist for one purpose and it has nothing to do with making life better for its citizenry.

I have a theory that the comfortably well-off middle class people, who earn over 100k (qualified professionals like doctors, lawyers, and top civil servants like council workers and even head teachers of academies, etc) believe they deserve a better life than poorer people. They have second homes, can pay for their children's education, have log burners, EVs, heat pumps, etc. It costs them nothing to impose their values on poorer people, whether it is to force everyone to buy an EV or walk, or buy a heat pump or go cold.

If you earn £50 per hour, you are never going to be concerned about whether a tin of baked beans doubles in price from 50p to £1. You probably have never seen a baked bean in real life anyway.

I used to live in London, I wish I had stayed there, but I don't think I would have liked Khan as Mayor.
