Rising violence and a growing democratic crisis in Israel strain U.S. support

For years, as Israeli politics marched steadily to the right, the growing backlash among its traditional supporters fueled concerns and warnings that the U.S. government may ultimately be forced to reconsider its role as Israel’s most important — and often most unflinching — ally. Until now, they have remained just that: concerns and warnings. But, with Israel’s new government stocked with ultranationalists and stoking profound questions about the nation’s democratic future, there is a sense that this time may be different. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to weaken the Supreme Court has triggered nationwide protests and a growing constitutional crisis. An eruption of violence in the occupied West Bank — including near-daily Israeli raids, a rampage by Jewish settlers and attacks by Palestinian militants — has led the CIA director to warn that a third intifada could be imminent.

And the international community is aghast over the rise of some far-right figures, including one senior minister who recently called for Israel to “wipe out" a Palestinian village. For the Biden administration, which has echoed many of those concerns, the urgent question is whether they necessitate any change in policy toward a nation heavily reliant on assistance, military cooperation and international political support from Washington. “The United States should back up our concerns with actions,” said Daniel Kurtzer, who was U.S. ambassador to Israel under President George W. Bush. In an interview, he said the U.S. should consider curbing bilateral programs — but not security aid — and supporting U.N. Security Council resolutions criticizing Israel that the U.S. has historically blocked.

So 80 years of brutal treatment to the Palestinians was not enough to phase the Washington politicians,
but Israel taking a political hard right suddenly makes Israel a nefarious element... hmmmmm

BMK, I hope you are not suggesting that historical treatment to Jews justifies what the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians. 2 wrongs do not make a right.

Jordan should be reluctant to give some of their land to the Palestinians, just as the Palestinians should not have to give their land to immigrant Euro Jews

Biden's puppet-masters need to stay the hell out of Israeli domestic affairs.  The issue with the judiciary has been a problem for a long time and they made the same mistake our Leftists made here.  They tried to use their corrupted system to take out the chief executive, and failed.  Bibi and Co. are just giving them back some of their own medicine.  When you try to kill the King, you'd BETTER succeed.

No news there.  Let it come.  It will re-unite the Israelis and refocus them on what the real threat is.  The Leftists in the streets will make an easy target during the "peaceful" month of Ramadan.

Having met the Palestinians, and been offered their children as prostitutes, and seen the children deliberately being made to play in military targets so that they will die if the Israelis bomb the site so the PLO or "Hummus" can claim child civilian casualties, I can say that my opinion on the matter has been completely formed.  The so-called "Palestinians" are actually Jordanian migrants who arrived in the 1930s during the Jewish led building boom in the region.  With no claim to the land, the Jordanians decided to stay and call themselves Palestinians, while the REAL Palestinains, the Palestinian Arabs, had integrated into the Israeli state and have full citizenship and rights.  The Koran says that it is in full accord with the Jewish and Christian texts, and the Old Testament is quite clear that all the Amelekites have to die, so good Muslims should be slaughtering the Palestinians, who are the descendants of the Amalekites, if they wish to follow the words of the Prophet.  I have zero time for Palestinians and their bogus claims for statehood, and I would advise everyone else to seriously consider the lies we are being fed by this group of thugs and bullies who were bragging how they would "Drive the Jews into the Sea" in 1949, straight after the holocaust.  I don't think the Jews are saints, in fact I think many Jews are unpleasant people, but if I have to choose between Israel and Palestine, it will always be Israel.

A few protestors that are hell bent on having their way. Israel has free and fair elections, these protestors have no right to dismantle the government.

Yes, Israel has free and fair elections but what one person, Netanyahu, is trying to implement is not free or fair. Even his own party members are opposed. Maybe not opposed to the change itself but the way it is enforced.

I am not for or against the law, have nothing to lose or gain. But it just shows what kind of person Netanyahu is. A criminal dictator wannabe.

All eyes on Israel right now

It becomes more clear, daily, that the western world's so-called democracies have been infiltrated by a radical element of what used to be called "liberals" or "Democrats".  What we are seeing in Israel now is a slightly more organized and focused version of what the Left did against Trump's administration.  Those here who will predictably laugh and mock are actually complicit with this anti-democratic, violence-oriented movement.

There have been at MOST, a couple of hundred thousand protesters in the streets and the difference is made by having full control of a media narrative as well as the COURTS.  The changes the Right are demanding are made to sound like they are creating a totalitarian government.  What their media doesn't mention is that their court system has become a political bastion of Left-leaning activists.  In their current system, courts have no legislative oversight and are not selected by the people.  The currently serving judges are allowed to pick their own members and replacements.

They can effectively overrule and set aside ANY LAW they disagree with and face no repercussions at all.  That's the truth and anyone who says that is a system they'd be willing to live under, peacefully, if they were of the opposite party, is a liar, IMO.  Their precious "democracy" is defined as whatever allows them to have unquestioned control, election results be damned.

IF Trump - or even DeSantis is elected next year, we will see the same thing in the US.

Israel's people have become as hate-filled toward the "others" amongst them that they risk losing everything.  That is one nation that cannot survive for long without coming together against their enemies.  The Left there is just as evil and selfish as it is everywhere else.  The Right was duly elected and has legitimacy to bring the changes their voters wanted.  Just as with the Left in DC when Trump was chosen by the people, they are going into the streets to disrupt life and to resist the changes their neighbors VOTED FOR.  If Trump is re-elected, we will see this type of strategy, on steroids.  The Left will be threatening whatever it takes to "save America" from Trump's voters.  They will ignore the fact that the election should have any meaning at all.

Yeah. They should be more like Trump supporters and ignore who their neighbors votes for by literally trying to stop the election results lol

Actually... Since the 1920s the attitudes of the different Jewish sub-communities in Israel have varied in their attitudes towards the so-called Palestinians and other nationalities around them.

Wrong.  The Kibbutz system which is completely socialist has been the economic backbone of Israel and responsible for raising the bulk of the defense militias of the Israeli state for most of its history.  I seriously wish that the Dems in the USA were stacking out the military the way the Left does in Israel.

Netanyahu is as corrupt as Putin.  He shouldn't be in office.  He's a goddamned criminal.

Now you are defending another criminal who literally performed a treasonous attack on the Republic of the USA and should be sent to the electric chair for his crimes imo.  Trump tried to stage a coup d'etat against the USA .  We all saw it live on TV.  How he is still alive is a puzzle to me, and proof of how spineless the Left in the USA truly is imo.  The GOP has gone  so far off the deep-end under his administration that it seems unable to walk itself back to sanity, when it was once a worthwhile political party.  In its present form the GOP is infiltrated by Putin stooges, most of whom should be in jail for treason.  Then again, I personally would have sided with the Union over the Confederacy, and the Allies over the Nazis, and NATO over the USSR.  I know Trump supporters don't hold these views because they love totalitarian strongmen and being told what to do by dictators, even as they decry representative government "interfering in their lives".

He was duly elected.  The Left in Israel are trying to do the same to him that was done to Trump.  Delegitimize and try to run him from office.  Either we live in a representative democracy or we live in a thugocracy.  The reason I'm watching the Left in Israel is to see the template they'll use here next year if they don't manage to win the presidency.

THAT is an effing LIE, Mr.  You can repeat it as often as you like and it comes down to an opinion and I REJECT that opinion.  I have a feeling that if he wins next year we will see the Left doing exactly the same stuff in US cities as a way to disrupt his agenda or even to drive him from office.  It's not apt to end well for any American but if they insist I guess we'll all get to go to the "dance".  Our elections will be free and fair and then accepted or we'll stop trusting them and shortly thereafter stop obeying illegitimate laws.

We're in a world of hurt if that few people can overtake our government. Pssst, don't tell Russia or China.

Meanwhile there were courthouses, police departments and other government buildings and blocks of certain cities burning almost constantly for a couple of years. During a pandemic too! You couldn't walk down the street without a mask without someone harassing you. And those people looked normal until their faces were filled with rage...all veins and blood vessels about to pop. The mask Nazis.
