Gary Lineker: Viewers cancel licence fee after BBC’s day of controversy marks ‘final straw’

Viewers are cancelling their TV licence fees after a day of controversy rocked the BBC have said they feel the corporation has “sold its soul”. A number of contentious issues have plagued the broadcaster in recent days.

Friday alone saw Match Of The Day presenter Gary Lineker asked to step back from presenting the show, Question Time presenter Fiona Bruce accused of trivialising domestic abuse and claims the BBC pulled an episode of a new Sir David Attenborough series out of fears of a political backlash.

“The BBC’s decision not to broadcast (Sir) David Attenborough’s episode in case it offended right-wing viewers was the final straw. I had to cancel my TV licence otherwise I would feel that I would be supporting their agenda.”

“I think the BBC has sold its soul – the once great public service broadcaster is now in my view nothing more than a mouthpiece for the most right-wing British government ever to hold office,” said Ms Gordon, a Labour voter.
“Shame on them. The BBC is not, in my view, impartial anymore.”

The Beeb are worse than right wing, they're left wing. All those luvvies. Glad to see Gary sticking up for those poor immigrants fleeing France. We were lucky he found time to present during Qatar with all his caring output for people truly suffering.

Gary can take more refugees. Why Rasheed stayed just for 20 days?

Well, at least he'll now have a bit of free time to sort out his dodgy tax affairs.

They're both hypocrites,we can't even watch match of the day without having to sit through a 20 minute lecture about diversity, racism or gender equality.

I don't understand why so many people are against free speech. Why can't someone speak their mind, even if it is a controversial subject? Whatever, it seems the BBC's right-wing bias may be their undoing:

Immediately after his suspension was announced, fellow presenters and pundits came out in solidarity, including MOTD regulars Ian Wright, Alan Shearer and Jermaine Jenas. Alex Scott, presenter of Football Focus, pulled out of her show, while much of BBC Radio 5 Live’s sports reporting was replaced by recorded content.

Amid signs that the row may be changing public perception of the government’s asylum policy, the furore has also exposed deep Tory splits and unease over its hardline nature, under which refugees arriving on small boats in the UK will be detained and deported “within weeks” – either to their own country if it is safe or a third nation if it is not.

The BBC is very right wing: Fiona Bruce said of Stanley Johnson "he only broke his wife's nose as a one-off" on QT, when it is well know she had a life-time of physical abuse from him, Richard Sharp was appointed Chairman because he was a Tory donor and had arranged a personal loan for Johnson, and BBC interviewers have been outed snipping the word 'Brexit' and any references to it when asking business people  what they felt about the economy. Linaker was suspended because he was critical of the way the present government is hell-bent on turning the UK into a pariah nation- using inflammatory rhetoric ( "100 million possible refugees", " invasion", "the will of the British people" etc) and trying to break international law. He used a private Twitter account and did not use his platform on the BBC.

Yes, sure. That's why it's always the far left Guardian that runs to their defence whenever there is talk of doing away with the Tele tax.

The BBC have pushed a left wing agenda for the last 20 years, and don't pretend to be that naive about their reporting of Brexit before and after the referendum.

The BBC have plenty of form with this sort of thing, Emily Maitless being another prime example, they've been doing this sort of crap for years and been getting away with it, seems this time the government have stepped in and said enough. Besides, this isn't all about free speach, it's about his terms of employment contractually. And remember he also got a free pass doing this sort of thing during the world Cup, he could have made his opposition to the regime clear by refusing to go, but his morals weren't quite that strong to resist taking the gig.

Petition calling for BBC to reinstate Gary Lineker as Match Of The Day host passes 200,000 signatures

The petition, started by the Mirror, states: “Outside the headquarters of the BBC in London is a statue of the writer George Orwell.

“It bears the words: ‘If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they don’t want to hear.’

“In a series of tweets Gary Lineker did just that. He told the Government that its policies to tackle illegal migration were inhumane and cruel.

“Rather than accept the freelance sports presenter was speaking from a position of genuine compassion, right-wing MPs immediately called for him to be removed from the BBC.

“The broadcaster should have stood up to this baying mob.

"It’s like waking up in a parallel universe. Suddenly, Britain’s metropolitan elites seem to care deeply about freedom of speech. Having spent years calling cancel culture a myth, and calling free speech ‘freeze peach’ for some peculiar reason, they’ve now all rushed to the barricades. What was the turning point? What made the scales fall from their eyes? Was it that autistic boy in Wakefield being sent death threats for committing ‘blasphemy’? Was it the scores of gender-critical women sacked and shamed for believing in biological sex? No, it was the BBC’s decision to temporarily suspend Gary Lineker. "

Putting into perspective

Quote

A young man, withholding his name, spoke for all. “They came for us with knives and machetes,” he said. “They robbed us. They kicked down the door and dragged us from our apartment.

This could develop into something more serious for Gary:

Could a likeable though lightweight TV personality actually run a country? Yes.

Volodymyr Zelensky had no experience of serious politics when he launched his bid for power in Ukraine. It hasn’t stopped the former actor and comedian from becoming a respected world leader.

But surely a former sports star could not do likewise?

Wrong again. The second most prominent politician in Ukraine is Vitali Klitschko, ex-boxing champion and mayor of Kyiv.

So could Gary Lineker do the same in Britain?

What?!

If Britain will be invaded then we should measure his guts, so to speak.
