In this day and age, showing sixth graders a naked picture is paramount to professional suicide. Teachers should really know better

Well they didn't say what else was included. They just highlighted famous works. The article sounds a little misleading but most are these days.

Quote

sixth graders were exposed to pornography during a lesson on Renaissance art that included Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture.

Quote

The instruction also included Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” painting and Botticelli's “Birth of Venus.”

What else was shown?

Buzz makes a good point.

Unless there is something important we don't know about than this is dumb as ****. Seriously? Parents can't deal with Michelangelo statues now?

Do you realize how foolish you comments are ?

Where you keep in closet your entire life, 6 graders are 11 to 12 years old and this so called exposure of children to a graphic sexual imagery occurred during lesson on Renaissance art that included Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. This same image is shown in PG rated movies, in TV Commercials, in non-sexual magazines as advertisements. Hell, the Christian Bible should be banned, the Bible has more graphic references that most books being banned.

How soon people forget, Heinrich Heine's ominous sentence, "those who burn books will in the end burn people,

This Crap has gone to far that it is absolutely ridiculous and for those support this religious indoctrination and I can do is laugh at you!

Its a friggin' statue FCS, the Catholic Church has believed it was a remarkable treasure for several centuries now.  If it is part of a history of art class, it really does not seem like gratuitous nudity.  OMG, isn't  Adam buck naked on the ceiling of the  Sistine Chapel? Better not show that painting either, not to mention 2000 years of Greek art and culture.

They should not teach art, culture, history or philosophy, just enough reading and writing to get a job in a slaughterhouse or factory.   Fruit pickers don't need to know about art or democracy.

Catholic Church and gratuitous nudity do not really go together.

Ancient Greeks and Romans, thou practical in most regards, seemed to have a very lax attitude towards minors and nudity. One I’d rather we not emulate.

There is a time and place for introducing the beauty of the human form but I don’t think it’s during the sixth grade.

Is a Michelangelo statues not letting kids be kids?

Literally what do you even think happens when they see a statue? They become traumatized? They decide to have sex? They realize that humans have private parts? What exactly is the fear here.

The fear some of y'all have over the human body is unnatural.

Like there are tribes where woman walk around shirtless all day.

ONE parent complained. One.
I got more complaints from parents after I cancelled the High Jump during the Sports Carnival because one of the kids got hurt (specifically there were three complaints and about a dozen comments in support of me, after they heard one of the parents complaining to the boss on the day and none of the complaints were from the parents of the kid who got hurt).

I was just going to say...certainly, no museums allowed. Most medieval and renaissance art contains nudes as does Greek and Roman art. Kids can't go to the Vatican!

It's the Koma woman in Nigeria. I'm not sure if there are more.

But I still would like an answer to the question.

A Florida charter school principal has been forced to resign after a parent complained sixth graders were exposed to pornography during a lesson on Renaissance art that included Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture.

The Tallahassee Democrat reported that the principal, Hope Carrasquilla, of Tallahassee Classical School resigned this week after an ultimatum from the school board's chairman.

One parent complained the material was pornographic and two other parents said they wanted to be notified of the lesson before it was given to their children, Carrasquilla said. The instruction also included Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” painting and Botticelli's “Birth of Venus.”

That's about as backward and ignorant as a community could get. For Gods sakes don't take'em on a field trip to Pompeii--there's willies all over the place!

 If religious prudes don't like it they should send their kids to religious private schools. It's a free country, public schools are not their cult church.

Most posters here feel children should be allowed to see historical art/cultural work.  How would people feel about children viewing pictures of the Sheela na gig medieval statues which are all over Europe? The same? I just wonder.

Did you miss the works of art described in the OP?  They were originally commissioned by the Catholic Church.

Catholic Church plus nudity plus Children is not a match made in heaven

Something is off about this story. We can hardly keep graphic depictions of sex acts out of our schools and rarely is anyone held accountable for it. Yet this school showed classical artwork and the principal was immediately forced out? Right.

The furor over Western culture and Christian themes is an everyday occurrence.
