A jogger was attacked and killed by a bear on a woodland path in north-east Italy this week, the first case of its kind.

On Wednesday (April 5), local residents discovered the body of 26-year-old Andrea Papi, who frequently ran in the Val di Sole valley in the northern region of Trentino-Alto Adige.

The alarm was raised after Papi, did not return from his usual run on Monte Peller on Wednesday afternoon.

Rescue operations were conducted into the night and his body was eventually found at Monte Peller, a peak in Trentino.

A bear has been captured in the Italian Alps not far from where it killed a 26-year-old jogger.

Italians were shocked by Andrea Papi's death in early April in the north-eastern region of Trentino-Alto Adige.

Once the bear was identified as a 17-year-old known as JJ4, authorities issued an order for it to be put down.

But the order for the she-bear to be shot on sight was later put on hold and JJ4 has been taken to a wildlife centre. Her fate is yet to be decided.

A bear that killed a jogger in the Italian Alps has had its life spared for now after a court suspended an order to have it euthanised.

Andrea Papi died in early April in the north-eastern region of Trentino-Alto Adige in an attack that shocked many Italians.

The 17-year-old brown bear, known as JJ4, was later captured by park rangers after DNA proved she was involved.

An order by the authorities to kill her has now been frozen until 27 June.

Court grants reprieve to brown bear that killed Italian jogger

Judges at the Rome administrative court, known as the council of state, said on Friday that while the bear should be kept in captivity for public safety, the cull order was “disproportionate” and unnecessary.

It was another reprieve for the bear, whose fate has grabbed media attention since the attack. The head of the province of Trento, where the attack took place, has pushed for the bear to be destroyed, while animal rights groups have fought for it to be spared.

A definitive decision is not expected until a further appeal in December.
